Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between unemployment and mortality, considering potential confounders. Results showed a significant association between unemployment and higher mortality rates among men, with leading causes being neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases, and suicides. However, the lack of economic resources did not modify this association. Unemployment was not significantly associated with mortality among women.

Summary: Social isolation can lead to chronic sleep loss and increased food consumption in Drosophila, mimicking the hyperphagia seen in lonely humans. Chronic social isolation alters the expression of metabolic genes and induces a brain state that signals starvation, promoting sleep loss and overconsumption of food. Neural activities in specific neurons play a crucial role in the link between chronic social isolation, metabolism, and sleep.

Summary: The study found that individuals with better vitamin K status in chronic kidney disease have a lower risk of all-cause mortality, but there is no significant difference in the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of individual comorbidities and multimorbidity on mortality risk among US veterans with new-onset CKD. Results showed that cardiovascular disease was associated with the highest relative risk of death in younger veterans, while dementia was associated with the highest relative risk of death in older veterans. The additive effect of multimorbidity on risk of death was stronger in younger veterans than in older veterans.

Summary: The combination of rivaroxaban and aspirin reduces overall cardiovascular mortality and specific cause-specific cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic CAD or PAD. The mortality benefits increase with higher baseline risk factors.

Summary: Kidney histopathologic lesions, including nonproliferative glomerulopathy, diabetic nephropathy, and kidney vascular diseases, are associated with an increased risk of death or major adverse cardiovascular events. Mesangial expansion and arteriolar sclerosis are also linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular events. These findings provide insights into the heart-kidney relationship beyond traditional markers such as eGFR and proteinuria.

Summary: The clinical outcomes of lung cancer patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are controversial, and there is insufficient evidence regarding the treatment and prognosis of lung cancer in patients with CKD. This study evaluated the clinical course and prognostic factors of moderate CKD patients with lung cancer.

Summary: The urinary proteomic classifier CKD273 has been found to be predictive for cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease. In patients with CKD Stages G1-G3b and without a history of cardiovascular disease, CKD273 is a strong and independent predictor of fatal or non-fatal cardiovascular events.

Summary: The efficacy of vitamin D supplements in patients with chronic kidney disease is controversial. Observational studies have shown that higher circulating concentrations of 25hydroxyvitamin D are associated with improved health outcomes. However, recent large clinical trials have contradicted these findings.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study investigated the joint association of hyperuricemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) with mortality in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The results showed that both hyperuricemia and CKD were independently associated with increased in-hospital and long-term mortality risk in CHF patients. These findings highlight the importance of managing hyperuricemia and CKD together in the management of heart failure.

Summary: According to the 2019 ESC guidelines, echocardiographic measurement of left ventricular function is recommended for risk stratification in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). However, there is limited data on the impact of valvular heart disease (VHD) in CCS patients. This study found that moderate or severe VHD is significantly associated with mortality risk in CCS patients, independent of LV function and other covariables.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that a diet rich in fiber can prevent the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated complications. This review highlights the health benefits of high fiber intake in CKD patients, such as improving gut health and reducing inflammation. However, many CKD patients do not meet the recommended fiber intake, possibly due to concerns about dietary potassium. It is recommended to increase fiber intake and work with a dietitian to ensure a proper diet plan. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps and improve patient adherence to a high-fiber diet.

Summary: The study found that chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is highly prevalent in the population and closely associated with cardiovascular risk factors and disease. Patients with CVI face an increased risk of death, independent of factors such as age, gender, and other cardiovascular risk factors.

Summary: This study evaluated the antidiabetic medication initiation patterns among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that metformin remained the first-line treatment for both groups, but its overall usage declined. The use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) increased, especially among patients without CKD. The usage of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) was low, while dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) and sulfonylureas were still commonly used among patients with CKD.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of interhospital fragmentation on in-hospital mortality, length of stay, and costs in 30-day readmissions. The results showed that fragmented readmissions were associated with higher in-hospital mortality and cost. Mortality was consistently higher for fragmented readmissions for patients with congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
