Diesel soot (Euro IV and Euro VI) was investigated with spectroscopic methods such as near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). C and O K-edge NEXAFS show that structural disorder on the surface is accompanied by a higher amount of oxygen functional groups. O K-edge NEXAFS and O1s XPS results are discussed with the aim to elucidate the nature of the oxygen surface species. The analysis of the data presented here allows the postulation of a hypothetical structure for soot samples emitted by diesel engines.

Which particles to select, and if yes, how many? Subsampling methods for Raman microspectroscopic analysis of very small microplastic

Christian Schwaferts, Patrick Schwaferts, Elisabeth von der Esch, Martin Elsner, Natalia P. Ivleva

Summary: Micro- and nanoplastic contamination is a growing concern for environmental protection and food safety, requiring reliable quantification through analytical techniques. Raman microspectroscopy allows for identification of single particles, with larger particles easily quantified through random sampling while smaller particles require window-based analysis. A bootstrap method is introduced for error quantification, recommending random window selection schemes for improved efficiency.

Summary: This study discusses the best practices for microplastic sampling campaigns in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and explores the potential synergies between thermoanalytical and spectroscopic analysis. The results show that polyethylene (PE) is consistently the most prominent polymer in WWTP effluents and can serve as a surrogate polymer to assess the total polymer removal efficiency of tertiary sand filters.

Multi-element stable isotope Raman microspectroscopy of bacterial carotenoids unravels rare signal shift patterns and single-cell phenotypic heterogeneity

Julian Weng, Kara Mueller, Oleksii Morgaienko, Martin Elsner, Natalia P. Ivleva

Summary: The combination of single-cell Raman microspectroscopy and stable isotope probing allows for tracking carbon and hydrogen fluxes at the single-cell level, with high potential for analyzing metabolic processes and biogeochemical cycles. This study investigates the use of resonance Raman enhanced microspectroscopy for tracking bacterial carotenoids and reveals high phenotypic heterogeneity and evidence for de novo synthesis. It also explores the uptake of hydrogen into carotenoids and a novel approach for simultaneous monitoring of carbon and hydrogen uptake.

Summary: A comprehensive physicochemical characterization of heterogeneous nanoplastic (NPL) samples remains challenging due to the need for a combination of measurement techniques to improve accuracy and robustness. Various methods including DLS, NTA, TRPS, TEM, SEM, CLS, FFF-MALS, pyGC-MS, and RM were evaluated for NPL size, shape, chemical composition, and quantification. The applicability and limitations of these methods were assessed using representative particles of different chemical natures. The results showed that orthogonal batch methods provided comparable results for monodisperse spherical samples, while deviations were observed in polydisperse and non-spherical particles. Specific techniques such as TRPS and electron microscopy provided increased resolution and morphological information.
