Summary: For the first time, the fate of radicals in heterogeneous chemical oxidation treatment systems was studied, with UV-AHP and UV-APS generating center dot OH and SO4 center dot- radicals that impact treatment efficiency. The higher scavenging rates of center dot OH by alumina and aqueous/solid phase constituents, compared to SO4 center dot-, contributed to lower treatment efficiency in the UV-AHP system. The cost assessment based on overall treatment efficiency showed higher specific cost for treating the probe compound with UV-AHP due to its lower treatment efficiency compared to UV-APS.

Summary: Acetylferulic paeonol ester (APE) and ferulic paeonol ester (FPE) were synthesized and their structures were confirmed using various techniques. The results showed that APE was more effective in inhibiting fish oil oxidation compared to FPE, indicating that novel compounds with enhanced antioxidant activities can be obtained by covalently bonding two antioxidant active molecules.

Summary: The study explored FA derivatives by utilizing the FA structural skeleton and conducted various experiments to evaluate their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Among the compounds tested, S-52372 showed promising scavenging effects on free radicals, anti-inflammatory properties, and lower toxicity compared to FA. Further research is warranted to explore its potential as an ideal FA derivative.

Summary: This study investigated the structural features and antioxidant capacity of nixtamalized maize bran arabinoxylans (MBAX). It found that MBAX had a high antioxidant capacity, which could be attributed to the high arabinose-to-xylose ratio and specific ferulic acid substitution pattern in this polysaccharide.

Summary: In recent years, sulfite (S(IV)) has been used as an alternative to persulfates to remove antibiotics in wastewater. However, there is a need for a cheap, environmentally friendly, and effective catalyst. This study used a micron-scale iron-carbon composite (mZVI@C-800) coupled with S(IV) to degrade metronidazole (MNZ). The results showed that the MNZ removal rate reached 81.5% under optimized reaction conditions. The introduction of carbon enhanced the corrosion of mZVI, releasing more Fe2+ and improving the efficiency.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of using Graphdiyne (GDY) anode for electrocatalytic water to produce hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot). The results demonstrate that the GDY anode can selectively produce (OH)-O-center dot, providing a theoretical basis for finding novel environmental EAOP anodes.

Summary: A Co-N-C nanomaterial composed of CoN4 sites on graphitic carbon nitride was constructed to achieve self-cascade activation of O-2 in water, guiding the generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH•) in a controlled manner. This material exhibited highly selective oxidation properties, allowing efficient synthesis of various organic acids from furan alcohols, aromatic alcohols, and fatty alcohols under mild conditions. The study demonstrated the promising utility of O-2 in a low energy-consuming way, independent of light or electricity.

Summary: This study investigated the hydroperoxide radical scavenging activity of seven known abietane diterpenoids isolated from Salvia barrelieri. The results showed that these compounds have different radical scavenging mechanisms in different environments, and exhibit excellent antioxidant activity in aqueous solution. Compound 7 demonstrated significantly higher HOO* scavenging activity compared to the reference antioxidant Trolox, making it a promising radical scavenger in physiological environments.

Summary: Ferulic acid (FA) is used in skin formulations to protect against ROS produced by UVA radiation, and its protective mechanisms may involve direct scavenging, inhibition of LOX enzyme, and chelation reactions to prevent the formation of (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Inhibition of the prooxidant LOX enzyme could be a more relevant mechanism than iron chelation or assumed direct scavenging of ROS in skin protection against UVA induced oxidative stress.

Summary: The addition of metal-free reducing agent thiosulfate (S2O32-) in Fenton reaction effectively addresses the issues of Fe(III) precipitation and slow Fe(III) reduction. The degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is significantly accelerated over a wide pH range (3.0-7.0) by S2O32-. The complexation and reduction role of S2O32- prevents the precipitation of iron ions and accelerates the reduction of Fe(III), leading to enhanced SMX degradation.

Summary: By using density functional theory, this study investigated the physical and chemical properties of monocarbonyl derivatives (MACs), and found that hydroxyl substitution at o- and p-positions significantly improved the electrophilic and antioxidant activity of MACs. Furthermore, aqueous solutions were found to boost the reactivity of MACs. These findings provide important information and references for understanding and designing MACs drugs.

Summary: The global descriptors of the chemical activity of gallic acid were determined using various computational methods and solvation models. The calculations revealed the scavenging mechanisms of gallic acid in vacuum and water medium and the thermodynamic parameters characterizing its antioxidant activity. Among the parameters of chemical activity, the indexes Ra and Rd are the most independent of the computational method and the solvation model used, making them reliable sources of information.
