Summary: In addition to proven medications, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are considered to have additive effects on cardiovascular health. They influence the cardiovascular system through various mechanisms, including effects on metabolism, inflammation, thrombosis, and direct effects on cells.

Summary: The study found that consuming two portions of fish per week significantly increased concentrations of EPA, DHA, and total n-3 PUFA in women of childbearing age, with a lower n-6:n-3 ratio compared to those consuming no fish or one portion per week. However, fish consumption did not have a significant effect on biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid profile in the current study.

Summary: The review found that supplementation of n-3 PUFAs has a modest beneficial effect on depressive symptoms, particularly in individuals with longer treatment duration and those without depression or with mild to moderate depression. However, there are differences in effects based on different EPA dosages, and the overall quality of evidence remains insufficient.

Summary: Neutrophils play a critical role in maintaining a stable immune system, but their hypo- or hyper-activation can lead to the onset or exacerbation of inflammatory conditions. Marine omega-3 fatty acids rapidly alter neutrophil function by changing their fatty acid composition, impacting eicosanoid synthesis, blocking transcription factors, and disrupting lipid rafts to reduce pro-inflammatory gene expression. Clinical trials in the past 15 years have shown the effects of marine omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on neutrophil function.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Parietichytrium sp. synthesizes DHA only through the elongase/desaturase pathway, and engineering this thraustochytrid allowed the production of EPA and n-3DPA. This system may provide a suitable solution for the large scale production of omega-3 fatty acids.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the amount of n-3 LC-PUFA provided by commonly consumed fishes, shrimps, and mollusks, to conduct a risk-benefit analysis of fish consumption. Consuming 2-3 servings of a variety of fishery products per week can help meet recommended n-3 LC-PUFA levels while maintaining a balance to avoid potential risks from contaminants.

Summary: Oral administration of omega-3 PUFAs leads to increased luminal omega-3 PUFA concentrations and changes to the microbiome in the ileum of individuals with a temporary ileostomy. There is large variability in ileal microbiome over time and between individuals, with no consistent change associated with acute omega-3 PUFA dosing.

Summary: High obesity rates around the world point to an urgent need for effective obesity prevention measures. Animal studies suggest that the effects of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids on adipogenesis may be mediated through various mechanisms. Divergent findings from human clinical trials and observational studies suggest that recommendations for humans regarding PUFA and obesity risk are not yet possible.

Summary: This review summarizes evidence from observational studies and clinical trials on the protective effect of LC omega-3 PUFAs against cognitive impairment and reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease. Findings suggest that individuals consuming higher amounts of LC omega-3 PUFAs are less likely to develop cognitive impairment and may benefit from a preventative strategy against Alzheimer's disease when consumed prior to or in the early stages of cognitive decline.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding Aurantiochytrium sp. to diets can significantly improve the growth performance and immune response of Trachinotus ovatus. With increased microalgae content, the growth rate and feed utilization efficiency of fish were enhanced, along with increased fatty acid content in blood and tissues, resulting in improved immunity and disease resistance in fish.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus that can lead to vision loss. The use of anti-oxidants for treatment has not been strongly supported by data. Omega-3 fatty acids have shown promising effects on cardiovascular health and their anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties make them potential therapeutic agents for diabetic retinopathy. However, more clinical trials are needed to fully understand their benefits.

Summary: The study showed cell type-dependent anticancer potential of DHA and EPA. Both compounds induced apoptosis in MM cells via multiple pathways and enhanced bortezomib chemosensitivity by activating NF-kappa B signaling pathway. Timing of concurrent treatment with bortezomib and DHA or EPA is crucial for optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Summary: Current guidelines recommend regular consumption of fat-rich fish to obtain sufficient omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for preventing cardiovascular events. However, the cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with diabetes are uncertain. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation reduces cardiovascular disease risk in patients with diabetes, with eicosapentaenoic acid showing a significant effect. Further well-designed trials are needed to evaluate safety and effects on atrial fibrillation.
