Summary: This study explores the historical roots of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), dating back to the 19th century, and recognizes it as a distinct neurological entity only a few decades ago. The methods include qualitative study and literature review, providing an overview of FTD's historical background, birth, evolution, and future directions. The results indicate that recognition of FTD was hindered by various factors such as rigid perceptions of dementia, division between neurology and psychiatry, limited neuroimaging capabilities, and lack of pathological proof.

Summary: The research in intracellular delivery technologies has surged with the advancement in cell-based therapies and reprogramming. Physical cell membrane permeabilization techniques, especially sonoporation, show promise in delivering functional cargos to various cells, but bubble-based methods may have limitations such as requiring contrast agents and potential damage to cell components. Development of non-bubble-based sonoporation mechanisms aims to overcome these limitations and improve intracellular delivery efficiency.

Summary: This passage introduces that all living organisms have a limited lifespan, and research has mainly focused on the investigation of cellular processes such as proliferation and differentiation, neglecting the understanding of mechanisms of cell elimination. Since the 60s-70s, there has been a systematic study of cell death, which is currently one of the most rapidly developing areas in biomedicine. Due to the wide scope of this research field, the passage attempts to discuss some of the hottest topics that are of interest to many researchers, but not all of them.

Summary: Combining microbiome and metabolome data can distinguish between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and healthy controls. Unsupervised clustering based on fecal microbiome-metabolome data revealed distinct subsets of IBS patients. The study also found associations between altered serotonin metabolism, unfavorable stress response related to gastrointestinal symptoms, and IBS, supporting the importance of the microbiome-gut-brain axis in the pathogenesis of IBS.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the associations between branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and cardiometabolic diseases (CMD), and found significant correlations but no causal relationships between BCAAs and CMD parameters. Specific associations were identified for isoleucine, and the association of valine was influenced by obesity status. These findings highlight the clinical importance of individual BCAAs in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of CMD.

Summary: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous genetic variants associated with complex genetic diseases and drug efficacy. However, functional characterization of these variants is challenging due to the lack of human model systems. Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) platforms, enabled by advances in molecular and nanotechnology, provide personalized platforms for studying the impact of genetics and environment on organ physiology. This review highlights the technology and showcases the potential of OoCs in disease modeling and pharmacogenetic research.
