Summary: This study aimed to obtain normative data on small intestinal and colonic permeability. Results showed that C-13-mannitol is the preferred probe for small intestinal permeability, while C-12-mannitol is not suitable for use.

Summary: The importance of plasma ascorbic acid lies in its enzymatic and antioxidant properties, as well as its involvement in various aspects of health. Dietary intake supports optimal levels, with supplementation at higher doses being a potential option. High dose AA may transiently increase intestinal permeability to enhance delivery of other micronutrients, though further study is needed to understand the potential mechanism for increasing small intestinal nutrient co transport and absorption.

Summary: An ex vivo porcine intestinal model was used to predict the effective permeability (Peff) of nutrients, and it closely predicted the Peff of two model nutrients in humans. The model showed similar results to an in vitro dialysis model, and both models have potential for predicting nutrient bioavailability.

Summary: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a syndrome characterized impairments of digestion and absorption and intestinal barrier failure in people living in insanitary or tropical environments. It contributes to impaired linear growth of children, slowed neurocognitive development, and diminished responses to oral vaccines. While noninvasive biomarkers permit large-scale studies, intestinal biopsies are still required to investigate pathophysiology in depth.

Summary: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is characterized by malabsorption and diarrhea. The study found that EED patients had partial villous atrophy, marked intraepithelial lymphocytosis, and expansion of goblet cells. The expression of proteins involved in nutrient and water absorption was increased, but the expression of tight junction proteins, except for claudin-4, remained unchanged. These findings suggest that EED activates adaptive intestinal epithelial responses to enhance nutrient absorption but is not sufficient to restore health.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a protocol for assessing intestinal permeability and lactase activity in human-milk-fed preterm infants through a sugar absorption test. A new GC-MS method was developed to analyze lactulose, lactose, and mannitol in urine and milk samples collected during the sugar absorption test. The protocol and GC-MS method provide valuable tools for monitoring the effects of nutritional interventions in preterm infants.

Summary: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is an inflammatory syndrome of the small intestine that is associated with enterocyte loss and gut leakiness. The diagnosis of EED currently lacks accurate standards. Some biomarkers were found to be associated with anemia, but there is little correlation between different biomarkers.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the true ileal indispensable amino acid digestibility of intrinsically labeled goat milk protein in South Indian women of reproductive age and measure the intestinal absorption of amino acid and inert sugar. Results showed that the digestibility of goat milk protein in South Indian women with normal intestinal function was comparable to healthy French adults.

Summary: The study revealed the association between enteropathogen burden, altered histopathological features, and intestinal permeability. The intestinal permeability test could potentially predict linear growth in children living in areas with endemic EED, but further validation is needed due to the complex pathophysiology.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of voided urinary volume on small intestine permeability ratios in healthy children. The results showed that sugar permeability ratios varied significantly with total urinary volume, and voiding status before sugar administration appeared to influence specific sugar ratios independently of total urinary volume.

Summary: This meta-analysis examines the LMR values in coeliac and Crohn's disease from 19 and 17 studies respectively. The results show significant differences in LMR among different conditions. However, high heterogeneity is observed due to variability in protocols used. Therefore, more robust alternative tests are needed for widespread clinical use of gut permeability measurements.

Summary: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) refers to an increase in bacteria in the small intestine beyond normal levels. SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and is not dependent on gender or race. SIBO is associated with various diseases and may play a role in their symptom development.

Summary: This study conducted on a cohort of 520 Sierra Leonean MAM children, discovered that EED scores derived from host fecal mRNA transcripts were variably correlated with the L: M test and host fecal proteins. Markers of intestinal inflammation, permeability, and defense were associated with growth outcomes.

Summary: This study investigates the expression of S100A8/A9 and S100A12 proteins in the intestine of cats with intestinal inflammation and lymphoma. It found that calgranulins-positive cells correlated with inflammatory changes and clinical severity, suggesting a role in both diseases. Further understanding of calgranulins in these feline diseases may lead to better diagnostics and treatments.
