Summary: Four substituted nonacenes with strategically placed triisopropylsilyl-ethynyl groups were synthesized and characterized. These compounds are the most stable and soluble nonacenes to date. They exhibit stability for several weeks in the solid state and have a half-life of 5-9 hours in dilute solution. Crystal structure analyses confirmed the structures of two nonacene derivatives. One derivative was tested as a thin-film transistor material and showed ambipolar charge transport. The stability of soluble nonacenes was achieved through triisopropylsilyl-ethynylation, halogenation, and methoxylation.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and characterization of a new type of metal complex using crystallographic, electrochemical, computational, and spectroscopic techniques. It was found that the metal complex can undergo reduction and catalyze macrocycle hydrogenation under cathodic electrolysis. Additionally, the complex was found to have long-lived excited states.

Summary: A series of hexapole helicenes (HHs) and nonuple helicenes (NHs) were synthesized from 1,3,5-tris[2-(arylethynyl)-phenyl]benzene through iodocyclization and palladium-catalyzed annulation. These helicenes exhibited unique structural features and were resolved into their enantiomers. The relative potential energies of their diastereomers were predicted using density functional theory calculations and structural considerations.

Summary: A one-step Rh-catalyzed method for site-selective ortho-C-H alkynylation of perylene, mono- and diimides of naphthalene is reported. This method not only increases the efficiency of ortho-functionalization of dyes but also provides a quick access route to highly functionalized dyes with potential optoelectronic applications.

Summary: Synthetic unnatural base pairs have attracted attention in DNA-based biotechnology. A recent study reported alkynylated purine-pyridazine pairs that showed selective and stable base-pairing. The researchers attempted to develop an on-column synthesis method for oligodeoxynucleotides containing alkynylated purine derivatives to explore the relationship between structure and base-pairing ability. The results demonstrated the influence of the pseudo-nucleobase structures on base pair stability and selectivity, highlighting the potential of the on-column strategy for screening superior alkynylated purine derivatives.

Summary: In this tutorial review, we discuss the mechanical properties of microgels and their measurement methods using atomic force microscopy. We also provide the synthetic background to understand how specific architectures and chemical functionalities enable these mechanical properties. Furthermore, we elucidate how the interaction of force with microgels can activate latent functionality. This review aims to enhance the understanding of this emerging field by introducing and connecting different research areas.

Summary: A series of homodinuclear beta-diketone lanthanide complexes were synthesized and further designed, showing ferromagnetic interaction between Dy and Tb centers and zero-field slow relaxation of magnetization for Dy complexes. The magneto-structural correlations of the complexes were discussed based on theoretical calculations and experimental outcomes.

Summary: The four inorganic-organic hybrid octa-Cu cluster sandwiched polyoxotungstates were synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by various methods. Analysis of their structures revealed different arrangements, with 1/2 forming a discrete dimer, and 3/4 forming a two-dimensional network that further expands into a three-dimensional framework. The compounds showed potential as semiconductor materials and were investigated for their visible light-driven catalytic H-2 evolution activity, electrochemical properties, catalysis for oxygenation reactions of thioethers, and magnetic behaviors.

Summary: The newly synthesized cationic water-soluble magnesium(II) and zinc(II) sulfanyl porphyrazines showed hydrophilic properties and poor binding to liposomes, resulting in lower logPo/w values for octaiodide salts compared to their neutral precursors. Moreover, they exhibited moderate singlet oxygen generation yields and higher susceptibility to decomposition after light exposure.

Summary: Unnatural base pairs (UBPs) with selective pairing properties have been widely used in nucleic acid-based technologies. In this study, we demonstrate a new design concept for achieving exclusive base pairing through the spatial separation of recognition units. By introducing alkynylated purines and pyridazines with pseudo-nucleobases, we successfully achieved stable and exclusive pairing properties in the DNA major groove. This study highlights the potential of separating the recognition interface as a strategy for developing new types of UBPs.

Summary: In this study, two enantiomers with helical carbon frameworks were synthesized and characterized. The novel structures were revealed through single crystal analysis, showing three propeller blades spiro-fused on two central benzene rings. Further investigation discovered stable bipolar electrochemiluminescence emissions existing in helical carbon frameworks, providing new insights into the future development of high-performance molecular luminescent devices.
