Summary: The current evidence suggests that neonatal SARS-coronavirus-2 infections tend to be mild, but data on the impact of maternal infection during pregnancy on fetal development are limited. We present a unique case of a moderately preterm infant with intracranial bleeding and periventricular leukomalacia potentially as a consequence of post-COVID-19 hyperinflammation during pregnancy.

Summary: This review examines screening protocols and recommendations for the timing of cranial ultrasound examinations in preterm neonates born before 32 weeks of gestation. The recommended timing for the examinations varied, with at least one examination in the first week of life universally recommended. Further studies are needed to establish an optimal protocol for improving detection and monitoring of brain injuries in very preterm neonates.

Summary: Research suggests that LPC-DHA/EPA-enriched krill oil can increase brain DHA and improve memory-related behavior in mice with the APOE4 gene. Therefore, long-term use of LT-krill oil supplements may provide some level of protection against age-related neurodegeneration.

Summary: Lear et al. demonstrate that delaying the blockade of the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) pathway can help attenuate cystic white matter injury and improve brain maturation in preterm foetal sheep. TNF blockade could be used as an effective strategy to reduce disability after preterm birth, with a wide therapeutic window.

Summary: The study revealed that repetitive LPS stimulation significantly inhibited brain cell development by impairing oligodendrocyte differentiation, while brain cell development was not affected in the late LPS group. Inflammation during the early developmental stage of oligodendrocytes increases the susceptibility of the preterm brain to inflammation-induced injury.

Summary: PVL is a common brain injury in preterm survivors, and RIPK1 plays an important role in its pathogenesis. Inhibition of RIPK1 can effectively alleviate brain injury and long-term neurobehavioral abnormalities in PVL by reducing neural cell necroptosis and reversing neuroinflammation.

Summary: Perinatal asphyxia affects oligodendrocytes, neuroinflammation, and cell viability in the telencephalon of rats, with the most significant impact observed at postnatal day 7. Treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can prevent the detrimental effects of perinatal asphyxia on myelination and oligodendrocyte survival.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of preterm white matter injury in preterm neonates. The results showed that preterm WMI occurred in 37.1% of neonates, with PIVH occurring in 17.8% and PVL in 24.3%. Risk factors were not associated with PIVH, but hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus and apnea of prematurity were significantly associated with increased risk of PVL.

Summary: Germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH) is a common pathology in infants, with long-term consequences. This study found that the complement pathway plays a critical role in the acute and chronic outcomes of GMH. Inhibiting the complement pathway can reduce hemorrhage, improve survival, and alleviate structural changes associated with brain injury.

Summary: This case highlights the association of WMI with GBS bacteremia without central nervous system invasion and suggests that intrauterine GBS infection in premature infants without interventions may lead to extensive and persistent GBS colonization, early-onset and recurrent GBS disease, and WMI. Controlling postnatal as well as intrauterine infection/inflammation with maternal prophylaxis may be crucial for preventing and limiting neurological injury.

Summary: In a neonatal rat model of periventricular leukomalacia, upregulation of GPR17 was associated with decreased myelin sheath formation, while downregulation of GPR17 led to increased myelin sheath formation by inducing Olig1 expression. This study suggests that targeting GPR17 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for white matter injury.

Summary: Achieving maternal-newborn docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) equilibrium (EQ) is important for optimizing newborn DHA status. This study aimed to determine the daily DHA intake during pregnancy most likely to result in EQ. The results suggest that an intake of 650mg DHA/day is necessary to increase the potential for EQ at delivery.

Summary: Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Steroids are the first-line treatment, but there is no standard approach for second-line therapy. ECP, with its immunomodulatory effect, is favored for treating GVHD as it has a low risk of relapse or infection. However, it requires specific conditions and equipment.

Summary: Networked control systems utilize communication networks to form closed feedback control loops. Information sharing and preventing information staleness are crucial for achieving desired control tasks. In this study, we conducted experimental research on multiple heterogeneous NCSs, focusing on MAC protocols. We proposed a novel contention-free algorithm and introduced a new metric called normalized mean squared error. Our results demonstrate the benefits of value-aware prioritization and the adverse effects of information staleness on control performance.

Summary: The optimal ventilation strategy has not been clarified yet for infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Ventilating these infants as if they were in the acute phase of respiratory distress syndrome and attempting early extubation can lead to errors. Considering the heterogeneous nature of the disease, a combined mode of volume-guaranteed synchronized intermittent mechanical ventilation and pressure support ventilation may be the most physiologically appropriate ventilation mode.

Summary: Myocardial infarction in young individuals often presents with atypical signs and symptoms and has different risk factors compared to older individuals. In addition to traditional risk factors, non-traditional factors also contribute to the risk profile of young individuals. However, the scarcity of studies and lack of guidelines make it challenging for these individuals to receive accurate medical care.
