Summary: The study demonstrates the neuroprotective effects of donepezil in a rat model of ischaemic stroke, showing significant reduction in infarct size and decreased expression of apoptotic markers and pro-inflammatory mediators. Additionally, treatment with donepezil led to increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1 alpha) proteins. Overall, donepezil shows potential as a therapeutic agent for attenuating injury following ischaemic stroke through modulation of inflammation and improvement of mitochondrial function, neurogenesis, and angiogenesis.

Summary: This study used cosolvent molecular dynamics simulation to detect potential binding sites on BAX protein and derived possible binding modes of three reported BAX activators. The results identified the trigger, S184, and vMIA sites as the major binding sites on full-length BAX structure. Solvent probes were found to bind more stably to the trigger bottom pocket. The findings provide useful guidance for designing experiments and discovering more effective BAX activators.

Summary: A self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor based on Cu3SnS4 nanoflower is constructed for the ultra-sensitive and portable real-time detection of human cytochrome c (Cyt c). The immunosensor shows good reproducibility, high specificity, good storage stability, and excellent detection capability of Cyt c in clinical serum samples. The detection range is from 1 fM to 1000 nM, with an ultra-sensitive detection limit of 0.35 fM.

Summary: Automatic protein function annotation is crucial for disease understanding and drug design. Similarity functions play an important role in protein function prediction, but there is a lack of specifically designed similarity functions for protein function annotation. This study analyzes the best similarity functions for the task and proposes a new one.

Summary: Brain inflammation and apoptosis contribute to neuronal damage and loss following ischaemic stroke, leading to cognitive and functional disability. H2-relaxin, a hormone with anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects, shows potential as a therapeutic for stroke. This study investigated the effects of post-stroke administration of H2-relaxin and found that it improved motor function and decreased apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

Summary: In this study, fermented BSG using Bacillus subtilis WX-17 was found to have higher nutritional components such as amino acids, fatty acids, and Vitamin K(2)MK7. Additionally, higher amounts of short-chain fatty acids were produced after fermentation. The fermentation also had different effects on gut microbiota composition, demonstrating the potential of utilizing BSG as functional food ingredients through microbial fermentation.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the catalytic performances of CEs by flexible loop exchange, resulting in mutants with improved isomerization activity and thermostability. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that loop exchange enlarged the entrance of the active site for substrate binding and benefited proton transfer. This work demonstrated the importance of the flexible loop surrounding the active site in determining the isomerization activity and thermostability of CEs.
