We have recently reported that the naturally occurring spliced variant of Hepatitis B virus protein, HBSP, displayed proapoptotic activity through its BH3 domain. To investigate whether the BH3 domain in HBSP interacted with Bcl-2 family of proteins, HBSP and Bcl-2 family of proteins were cloned and expressed in our mammalian two-hybrid system. Interaction assays were carried out in HepG2 cells and measured by the activity of the reporter gene product luciferase. Our results indicated that HBSP interacted with Bcl-2/Bcl-x1 in vitro and induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells. (C) 2008 IUBMB.

Summary: In this study, fermented BSG using Bacillus subtilis WX-17 was found to have higher nutritional components such as amino acids, fatty acids, and Vitamin K(2)MK7. Additionally, higher amounts of short-chain fatty acids were produced after fermentation. The fermentation also had different effects on gut microbiota composition, demonstrating the potential of utilizing BSG as functional food ingredients through microbial fermentation.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the catalytic performances of CEs by flexible loop exchange, resulting in mutants with improved isomerization activity and thermostability. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that loop exchange enlarged the entrance of the active site for substrate binding and benefited proton transfer. This work demonstrated the importance of the flexible loop surrounding the active site in determining the isomerization activity and thermostability of CEs.

Summary: This study investigated the modulatory effects of XOS on emotions and behaviors in a mouse model of chronic stress-induced depression. The results showed that XOS could improve depressive-like behavior by modulating neurotransmitters and gut microbiota. These findings suggest that XOS has the potential to be used as a prebiotic for mood disorders.

Summary: In this study, an innovative and sustainable strategy using highly-porous polymeric adsorbents was developed for the efficient purification of tea saponin (TS). The proposed method enabled the direct isolation of high-purity TS from industrial camellia oil production, with a high recovery ratio. This methodology shows promising potential for industrial-scale purification.

Summary: The acidification of peanut polysaccharide at pH 3.0 led to the formation of a stable gel structure for preparing oil-in-water emulsions, which exhibited resistance to digestion and maintained a strong structure. This emulsion showed promising potential as a cholesterol-free and low-fat salad dressing substitute.
