Summary: A novel aerobic moderately thermophilic bacterium, strain 2918(T), was isolated from a terrestrial hot spring in Kamchatka, Russian Federation. It grows at temperatures between 25-60°C and pH 5.0-8.0, representing a distinct lineage within Planctomycetes named Thermogemmata gen. nov. Strain 2918(T) is the first species of this new genus, named Thermogemmata fonticola sp. nov.

Summary: A novel anaerobic bacterium SYSU GA19001T, which belongs to the genus Clostridium, was isolated from a hot spring sediment sample. It showed the highest sequence similarity to Clostridium swellfunianum CICC 10730T (96.63%) and Clostridium prolinivorans PYR-10T (96.11%). The strain SYSU GA19001T is a Gram-stain positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, and it can grow at pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 37-55°C (optimum, 45°C), and in NaCl concentrations of 0-2.0% (optimum, 0%).

Summary: Two closely related moderately thermophilic bacteria, strains SYSU G05006T and SYSU G05005, were isolated from a sample collected from Rehai National Park, Tengchong, Yunnan Province, PR China. They were closely related to Caldovatus sediminis based on the phylogenetic analysis and were described as a new species, Caldovatus aquaticus sp. nov. Strain SYSU G05006T had a genome size of 3.87 Mbp and showed optimal growth at 55 degrees C and pH 6.0.

Summary: Sulfur cycling in marine sediments is primarily driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria, leading to the production of reduced sulfide and insoluble metal sulfides. A novel sulfate-reducing bacterium, Pseudodesulfovibrio cashew SRB007, was isolated from deep-sea cold seeps and demonstrated strong resistance and removal capabilities against various heavy metal ions. The dissimilatory sulfate reduction by P. cashew SRB007 contributes to its ability to remove heavy metals through the formation of insoluble metal sulfides.

Summary: In this study, three new strains closely related to the genus Thermus were isolated from a hot spring in southwestern China. The genomic profile and taxonomic status of one of the strains (SYSU G05001(T)) were determined using whole-genome sequencing and a polyphasic taxonomic approach. This strain, designated as Thermus brevis sp. nov., exhibited optimal growth at a temperature of 55 degrees Celsius, pH 7.0, and NaCl concentration of 1%.

Summary: A new microbial strain, named Elioraea tepida, was isolated from an alkaline siliceous hot spring in Yellowstone National Park, USA. The strain grows chemoheterotrophically by oxygen-dependent respiration and can also undergo photoheterotrophic growth under strictly oxic conditions. It does not exhibit photoautotrophic growth under oxic or anoxic conditions, indicating that it belongs to an aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium.

Summary: A Gram-stain-negative bacterium named Vineibacter terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. was isolated from vineyard soil in Taiwan. This bacterium is aerobic, non-motile, and capable of reducing nitrate, with optimal growth conditions at 30 degrees C and pH 7, belonging to the family Rhodospirillaceae.

Summary: Two bacterial strains, SYSU G02173(T) and SYSU G03142, isolated from hot springs in Tibet, belong to the family Sphingosinicellaceae and exhibit aerobic growth with optimal conditions at neutral pH and higher temperatures. These novel strains showed positive oxidase and catalase activities, along with motile rod-shaped cells and growth with NaCl in the culture medium.

Summary: The microbial communities in the terrestrial hot springs of the Kamchatka Peninsula were found to actively reduce sulfate, with diverse groups of sulfate-reducing prokaryotes operating in different habitats. The presence of sulfate-reducing prokaryotes varied in different hot springs, with different microbial populations dominating in neutral, slightly acidic, and moderately acidic environments. Archaea of the phylum Crenarchaeota were identified as the mediators of sulfate reduction in high-temperature acidic springs.

Summary: The coupling of dissimilatory manganese reduction and nitrogen transformation plays a significant role in elemental geochemical cycles. In this study, a strain of dissimilatory manganese reducing bacteria named Pantoea sp. MFG10 was isolated and found to be capable of reducing Mn(IV) oxides and NO3--N simultaneously, resulting in the formation of Mn(III) as a transient intermediate. The addition of manganese oxide greatly improved the denitrification efficiency and resulted in the formation of abundant Mn(III) secondary minerals.

Summary: A novel bacterium, strain B-154 T, was isolated from a terrestrial hot spring in the Baikal lake region. This strain is facultatively anaerobic and moderately thermophilic, with a growth temperature range of 30-57°C and pH range of 5.1-8.4. It is a chemoorganoheterotroph, capable of utilizing various mono-, di-, and polysaccharides. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that strain B-154 T belongs to a novel genus and species within the Verrucomicrobiota.

The results demonstrate that these bacteria can catalyze dissolution-reprecipitation reactions on different Fe(III) minerals, leading to the formation of diverse mineral products.

Summary: The growing production of synthetic plastics worldwide leads to increased plastic pollution, and research has shown that microbial degradation of plastics is slow but possible. Most studies focus on microbial degradation of polyethylene, polystyrene, and PET, with the most efficient process currently being the PET degradation by recombinant hydrolases from thermophilic actinobacteria. Various methods to accelerate microbial plastic degradation are also discussed.
