A reductively dehalogenating, strictly anaerobic, sulfate-reducing bacterium, designated strain AA1(T), was isolated from the marine sponge Aplysina aerophoba collected in the Mediterranean Sea and was characterized phenotypically and phylogenetically. Cells of strain AA1(T) were Gram-negative, short, curved rods. Growth of strain AA1(T) was observed between 20 and 37 degrees C (optimally at 28 degrees C) at pH 7-8. NaCl was required for growth; optimum growth occurred in the presence of 25 g NaCl l(-1). Growth occurred with lactate, propionate, pyruvate, succinate, benzoate, glucose and sodium citrate as electron donors and carbon sources and either sulfate or 2-bromophenol as electron acceptors, but not with acetate or butyrate. Strain AA1(T) was able to dehalogenate several different bromophenols, and 2- and 3-iodophenol, but not monochlorinated or fluorinated phenols. Lactate, pyruvate, fumarate and malate were not utilized without an electron acceptor. The G + C content of the genomic DNA was 58.5 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C-14:0, iso-C-14:0, C-14:0 3-OH, anteiso-C-15:0, C-16:0, C-16:0, C-16:1 omega 7c and C-18:1 omega 7c. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons placed the novel strain within the class Deltaproteobacteria. Strain AA1(T) was related most closely to the type strains of Desulfoluna butyratoxydans (96% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Desulfofrigus oceanense (95%) and Desulfofrigus fragile (95%). Based on its phenotypic, physiological and phylogenetic characteristics, strain AA1(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Desulfoluna, for which the name Desulfoluna spongiiphila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AA1(T) (=DSM 17682(T) = ATCC BAA-1256(T)).

Metabolic potentials of members of the class Acidobacteriia in metal-contaminated soils revealed by metagenomic analysis

Rui Xu, Xiaoxu Sun, Max M. Haggblom, Yiran Dong, Miaomiao Zhang, Zhaohui Yang, Enzong Xiao, Tangfu Xiao, Pin Gao, Baoqin Li, Weimin Sun

Summary: The Acidobacteriia are adapted to metal-rich environments and have the potential to transform metals like arsenic, mercury, and chromium through metabolic pathways. They may also possess the capability to alleviate acidic and metal stress. This discovery suggests that the ability for metal transformation could be widespread among Acidobacteriia members.

Inorganic particle accumulation promotes nutrient removal of vertical flow constructed wetlands: Mechanisms and implications

Huaqing Liu, Jian Zhang, Ximing Yu, Huijun Xie, Max Haggblom, Shuang Liang, Zhen Hu

Summary: Vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF CWs) are widely used for treating eutrophic water due to their economic and ecological advantages. Accumulation of inorganic particles in these wetlands significantly improves phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiencies through adsorption, plant uptake, and microbial degradation. Concentrated nutrients in the rhizosphere enhance plant growth and bacterial diversity, contributing to the enhancement of water treatment efficiency.

Serratia spp. Are Responsible for Nitrogen Fixation Fueled by As(III) Oxidation, a Novel Biogeochemical Process Identified in Mine Tailings

Yongbin Li, Lifang Guo, Max M. Haggblom, Rui Yang, Mengyan Li, Xiaoxu Sun, Zheng Chen, Fangbai Li, Xianfa Su, Geng Yan, Enzong Xiao, Haihan Zhang, Weimin Sun

Summary: Serratia spp. bacteria have been found to perform biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by oxidizing arsenic (As) in addition to using reduced sulfur (S). This discovery suggests that As-dependent BNF may be widespread in As-rich habitats and is a common metabolic trait in Serratia spp.

Desulfoluna spp. form a cosmopolitan group of anaerobic dehalogenating bacteria widely distributed in marine sponges

Isabel Horna-Gray, Nora A. Lopez, Youngbeom Ahn, Brandon Saks, Nathaniel Girer, Ute Hentschel, Peter J. McCarthy, Lee J. Kerkhof, Max M. Haggblom

Summary: Desulfoluna spp. is a cosmopolitan group of dehalogenating bacteria distributed in sponges containing organohalides. The association between sponges and their associated microbiota is influenced by the organohalogen chemistry of the sponge. The production of organobromine secondary metabolites in sponges may serve as a chemical defense, and Desulfoluna spp. and related strains are responsible for dehalogenation in sponges.

Immobile Iron-Rich Particles Promote Arsenic Retention and Regulate Arsenic Biotransformation in Treatment Wetlands br

Huaqing Liu, Rui Xu, Max M. Haggblom, Jian Zhang, Xiaoxu Sun, Peng Gao, Jiayi Li, Wangwang Yan, Wenlong Gao, Pin Gao, Guoqiang Liu, Haihan Zhang, Weimin Sun

Summary: The use of immobile iron-rich particles (IIRP) can enhance arsenic retention and regulate its biotransformation in treatment wetlands (TWs). TWs with IIRP achieved a stable arsenic removal efficiency over a long period of time, while no removal or release of arsenic was observed in TWs without IIRP. IIRP provide additional adsorption sites and increase the stability of adsorbed arsenic.

The Role of Fatty Acids from Plant Surfaces in the Infectivity of Colletotrichum fioriniae

Timothy J. Waller, Max M. Haggblom, Peter V. Oudemans

Summary: Aqueous extracts from flowers have a stimulating effect on the germination, secondary conidiation, and appressorial formation of fruit rotting fungi. Even raindrops passing over flowers can accumulate sufficient activity to influence the infectivity of these fungi. Nonpolar components of the cuticle were found to have high levels of bioactivity. Specific fatty acids and fatty acid methyl esters were identified as bioactive components, stimulating appressorial formation and secondary conidiation. This study emphasizes the importance of the bloom period for infection and suggests that the presence of specific fatty acids may affect the host susceptibility.
