Summary: This study found that the ALDH2 rs671 genotype related to alcohol consumption was associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer in men, especially among regular drinkers. However, the ADH1B rs1229984 genotype showed no significant association with colorectal cancer risk. The combined genotype with the highest genetically predicted alcohol consumption was associated with a higher risk for colorectal cancer.

Summary: High expression of ALDH2 is associated with better prognosis in gastric cancer patients. ALDH2 may cooperate with other genes to inhibit gastric cancer progression by regulating multiple signaling pathways and chemical carcinogenesis. Therefore, ALDH2 may serve as a prognostic marker and a potential therapeutic target for patients with gastric cancer.

Summary: In Eastern Asians, ALDH2 rs671 polymorphisms are associated with esophageal cancer, which may be linked to acetaldehyde accumulation. The study found that in men, the risk of esophageal cancer was higher with GA and AA genotypes, while in women, the risk was higher with GA and AA genotypes as well. Additionally, in men, the association between ALDH2 polymorphisms and esophageal cancer was influenced by alcohol consumption.

Summary: This study found an association between alcohol intake and semen parameters among East Asian men carrying the ALDH2*2 allele. Alcohol consumption was associated with significantly lower total and progressive sperm motility in ALDH2*2 carriers. Furthermore, ALDH2 expression in spermatozoa was significantly lower in ALDH2*2 carriers.

Summary: The ALDH2*2 variant is a genetic polymorphism that commonly leads to alcohol flushing reactions and is associated with the largest number of traits in humans. It affects nearly 8% of the world population, especially East Asians. Carriers of the ALDH2*2 variant present alterations in multiple blood biomarkers, clinical measurements, drug prescriptions, dietary habits, and lifestyle behaviors. They are also more susceptible to aldehyde-associated diseases. However, the interaction between alcohol and ALDH2-related pathology and the possible beneficial effects of ALDH2 deficiency are not well understood.

Summary: This study confirmed the effectiveness and advantages of the RT-PCR detection method in detecting H. pylori infection and verifying CLR resistance. Compared to RUT, RT-PCR more accurately detected H. pylori infection and could verify the presence of CLR resistance through fluorescence melting curve analysis. Due to the high sensitivity and accessibility of the RT-PCR method, it can help clinicians select suitable treatment regimens and improve the eradication rate.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the response of rat colon to a high-fat diet (HFD) and the effect of Clostridium butyricum on HFD-induced intestinal inflammation and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) according to sex. The results showed that HFD significantly increased inflammation scores and fat proportions. Clostridium butyricum improved HFD-induced colonic inflammation, increased SCFA production, and enhanced the expression of tight junction proteins. These effects were more pronounced in male rats, showing a sex difference.

Summary: Using the group-based trajectory model, our study aimed to identify distinct trajectories of cognitive function and investigate demographic factors that act as risk factors for cognitive decline. The study found that cognitive function trajectories among adults over 40 years of age were heterogeneous, with four trajectories identified: high, medium, low, and rapid decline. Older age, male gender, low educational level, bad dietary habits, diabetes mellitus, technical worker occupation, and lower income increased the likelihood of cognitive function decline.

Summary: Research on forest therapy and health outcomes is lacking and lacks a unified set of health indicators. Information about the natural therapeutic elements of forests and forest therapy programs is not sufficient. This systematic review summarizes the health outcomes of forest therapy from 2010 to 2021 and provides insights into the natural therapeutic elements, forest therapy sites, characteristics, and health outcomes. The analysis of 29 articles shows that walking and physical activity are the most common forest therapy interventions, which can improve overall sentiment condition and reduce depression, enhance psychological well-being, alleviate stress, and improve cardiovascular and endocrine systems. Walking, five-senses stimulation, physical activities, and meditation have positive psychological and physiological effects. The findings of this review can guide the planning and implementation of forest therapy programs.

Summary: Significant translational research advances have been made in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) research field in recent years. Endoscopic evaluation is a reasonable option for acquiring upper GI tissue for research purposes with minimal risk. The optimal number of biopsy samples and sample storage is crucial and might influence results. Few reports have been published on methods for sample collection from endoscopic biopsies. This review provides a protocol for collecting study samples for upper GI research, including microbiome, DNA, RNA, protein, single-cell RNA sequencing, and organoid culture, through a comprehensive literature review. Different methods and sample sizes are recommended for different types of analysis.
