Methods From 2003 to 2008, 445 patients with gastric cancer and 370 control subjects epsilon 50 years of age were included in the analysis. Logistic regression models including age, gender, education, smoking and drinking status, Helicobacter pylori infection and ALDH2 genotype were evaluated to estimate the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for the development of gastric cancer. Results For all subjects, the risk for gastric cancer was increased in ex-drinkers [OR 1.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07-2.64], but not in current drinkers. Subjects with inactive ALDH2 *2 allele(s) showed a lower level of alcohol consumption than ALDH2 *1/*1 homozygotes (P < 0.001). Among the ALDH2 *1/*2 carriers (n = 243), current/ex-drinkers had a significantly increased risk for gastric cancer compared with never/rare drinkers (OR 2.80, 95% CI 1.51-5.19). Among heavy drinkers (n = 115), ALDH2 *1/*2 heterozygotes had a 4-fold increased risk for gastric cancer compared with *1/*1 homozygotes (OR 4.26, 95% CI 1.10-16.47); however, no risk increase was seen among never/rare drinkers. Conclusions A dose-response association between alcohol intake and the risk for gastric cancer was not observed. However, ALDH2 polymorphisms were found to modify the susceptibility to the development of gastric cancer associated with alcohol intake, especially in case of ALDH2 *1/*2 genotype. The findings suggest an alcohol-ALDH2 genotype interaction in gastric carcinogenesis.

Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction for the Detection of Helicobacter pylori and Clarithromycin Resistance

Jin Hee Noh, Ji Yong Ahn, Jene Choi, Young Soo Park, Hee Kyong Na, Jeong Hoon Lee, Kee Wook Jung, Do Hoon Kim, Kee Don Choi, Ho June Song, Gin Hyug Lee, Hwoon-Yong Jung, Jung Mogg Kim

Summary: This study confirmed the effectiveness and advantages of the RT-PCR detection method in detecting H. pylori infection and verifying CLR resistance. Compared to RUT, RT-PCR more accurately detected H. pylori infection and could verify the presence of CLR resistance through fluorescence melting curve analysis. Due to the high sensitivity and accessibility of the RT-PCR method, it can help clinicians select suitable treatment regimens and improve the eradication rate.

Effect of Clostridium butyricum on High-Fat Diet-Induced Intestinal Inflammation and Production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids

Yonghoon Choi, Soo In Choi, Nayoung Kim, Ryoung Hee Nam, Jae Young Jang, Hee Young Na, Cheol Min Shin, Dong Ho Lee, Huitae Min, Yeon-Ran Kim, Yeong-Jae Seok

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the response of rat colon to a high-fat diet (HFD) and the effect of Clostridium butyricum on HFD-induced intestinal inflammation and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) according to sex. The results showed that HFD significantly increased inflammation scores and fat proportions. Clostridium butyricum improved HFD-induced colonic inflammation, increased SCFA production, and enhanced the expression of tight junction proteins. These effects were more pronounced in male rats, showing a sex difference.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for synchronous multiple gastric cancer (SMGC). Data from 14,603 patients with gastric cancer were analyzed, and the incidence of SMGC was found to be 4.04%, which was associated with male sex, age ≥65 years, and early gastric cancer. Unlike single gastric cancer, SMGC had a high survival rate.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between alcohol consumption in the young population and the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC). It found that moderate and heavy drinkers had a higher risk of early-onset CRC compared to light drinkers. Furthermore, there was a dose-response relationship between drinking frequency and early-onset CRC risk.

Risk Factors for Various Cognitive Function Decline Trajectories in Adults Over 40 Years of Age: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Sujeong Han, Jun-Young Lee, Sung-il Cho, Dae Jong Oh, Dae Hyun Yoon

Summary: Using the group-based trajectory model, our study aimed to identify distinct trajectories of cognitive function and investigate demographic factors that act as risk factors for cognitive decline. The study found that cognitive function trajectories among adults over 40 years of age were heterogeneous, with four trajectories identified: high, medium, low, and rapid decline. Older age, male gender, low educational level, bad dietary habits, diabetes mellitus, technical worker occupation, and lower income increased the likelihood of cognitive function decline.

Predicting Habitual Use of Wearable Health Devices Among Middle-aged Individuals With Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors in South Korea: Cross-sectional Study

Jaeyoung Ha, Jungmi Park, Sangyi Lee, Jeong Lee, Jin-Young Choi, Junhyoung Kim, Sung-il Cho, Gyeong-Suk Jeon

Summary: This study investigated the predictors of habitual use of wearable health devices among middle-aged individuals with risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS). The results showed that performance expectancy was the core variable explaining habitual use, which was influenced by health motivation, effort expectancy, and risk perception. The study highlights the importance of meeting users' performance expectations and promoting health motivation to induce habitual use behaviors.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use on metachronous gastric cancer in high-risk patients who underwent endoscopic resection of gastric neoplasms after Helicobacter pylori eradication. The results showed that long-term PPI use was associated with an increased risk of metachronous gastric cancer. These findings remained robust after sensitivity analysis and propensity score-matched analysis.

Indicators of the Psychosocial and Physiological Effects of Forest Therapy: A Systematic Review

Hae-ryoung Chun, Yoon-Young Choi, Inhyung Cho, Hee-kyoung Nam, Geonwoo Kim, Sujin Park, Sung-il Cho

Summary: Research on forest therapy and health outcomes is lacking and lacks a unified set of health indicators. Information about the natural therapeutic elements of forests and forest therapy programs is not sufficient. This systematic review summarizes the health outcomes of forest therapy from 2010 to 2021 and provides insights into the natural therapeutic elements, forest therapy sites, characteristics, and health outcomes. The analysis of 29 articles shows that walking and physical activity are the most common forest therapy interventions, which can improve overall sentiment condition and reduce depression, enhance psychological well-being, alleviate stress, and improve cardiovascular and endocrine systems. Walking, five-senses stimulation, physical activities, and meditation have positive psychological and physiological effects. The findings of this review can guide the planning and implementation of forest therapy programs.

Sample Collection Methods in Upper Gastrointestinal Research

Hyo-Joon Yang, Seung In Seo, Jin Lee, Cheal Wung Huh, Joon Sung Kim, Jun Chul Park, Hyunki Kim, Hakdong Shin, Cheol Min Shin, Chan Hyuk Park, Sang Kil Lee

Summary: Significant translational research advances have been made in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) research field in recent years. Endoscopic evaluation is a reasonable option for acquiring upper GI tissue for research purposes with minimal risk. The optimal number of biopsy samples and sample storage is crucial and might influence results. Few reports have been published on methods for sample collection from endoscopic biopsies. This review provides a protocol for collecting study samples for upper GI research, including microbiome, DNA, RNA, protein, single-cell RNA sequencing, and organoid culture, through a comprehensive literature review. Different methods and sample sizes are recommended for different types of analysis.
