Summary: Several recent studies have shown that intensive agriculture plays a significant role in global climate change and biodiversity decline. Synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which are necessary for high crop yields to meet the demands of a growing world population, are major contributors to these negative effects. However, the combination of biopesticides and biostimulants with organic farming methods can help reduce the use of agro-chemicals. This study demonstrates that the partial hydrolysis of chitosan can enhance its antifungal properties and allow for a synergistic effect when combined with copper acetate, leading to a significant reduction in copper concentration while maintaining the effectiveness of the treatment.

Summary: Gliadin-carboxymethyl chitosan composite nanoparticles (GC NPs) co-encapsulated with natamycin (Nata) and theaflavins (TFs) were added to carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) films as an antioxidant, antifungal, and structural enhancer. The stability of GC NPs dispersion was maintained by electrostatic repulsion. Coencapsulation of TFs improved the photostability of Nata and the antioxidant activity of the NPs dispersion. The addition of Nata/TFs-GC NPs improved the properties and activities of CMCS films.

Summary: The bioactivities of pristine chitosan are weak compared with commercial chemicals, hindering its application in food packaging and preservation. By modifying chitosan with dehydroabietic acid (DHA), a safe and biologically derived fruit preservative with excellent antifungal properties can be obtained. The antifungal activities of the modified chitosans against Penicillium digitutim and Penicillium italicum were investigated, showing that the DHA conjugated at C-6 with a free amino group at C-2 exhibited the strongest antifungal effect.

Summary: This study investigates the preparation of hydrogels and formulations for the treatment of Candida infections using piperonyl-imino-chitosan derivatives and Amphotericin B drug. The hydrogels were obtained through a reaction of chitosan with piperonal monoaldehyde, while the formulations were obtained through in situ hydrogelation of chitosan with piperonal in the presence of Amphotericin B. Structural characterization revealed the formation of imine units, and supramolecular characterization showed hydrophilic/hydrophobic segregation. The systems exhibited biodegradability, high swelling ability, sustained release of the drug, and promising antifungal activity against Candida strains.

Summary: Encapsulation of salicylic acid with silica or chitosan at different ratios was prepared and characterized in this study. The encapsulated samples showed the best antifungal effect against various agricultural fungi in vitro at the lowest ratios, and also reduced free SA toxicity on Arabidopsis thaliana seeds. This controlled and industrially viable process resulted in a product with high antifungal capacity and low toxicity for plants, showing great potential in agriculture.

Summary: In this study, the characteristics of N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammonium)propyl]chitosan salt (HTCS) were investigated, revealing a significant exchange of chloride counterions during synthesis, with the true degree of quaternization determined by NMR spectroscopy. This phenomenon of counterion exchange was further validated by XPS and shown for quaternized dextran, highlighting the importance of considering counterion type in applications of polyelectrolytes.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
