Visual simulation has emerged as a key planning tool for an intended built environment because it enables architects, engineers and project managers to visualize the evolution of a construction process before a project starts. The process thus enables efficient construction, reducing time and cost through planning and controlling resources, machines and materials. On the other hand, construction industry has evolved from traditional on-site building to offsite modern methods of construction (MMC). Highly efficient and effective onsite planning and management processes are urgently needed, and this would require implementing visual techniques in MMC to provide a powerful management platform for planning and controlling projects. Development in MMC is important as the technique can enable higher degree of air-tightness in buildings necessary for energy-efficient passive homes and would minimize waste generation, thus contributing to a sustainable development. This project reviews the simulated operational assembly-line process for on-site MMC using visualization techniques. 4D-CAD has been integrated for simulation of construction operation, superimposed to video taken by fix tablets (ipad2). Augmented reality (AR) scenes of project process can be introduced in planning stage to implement decision making for various built environments required. This paper is the first of a series of papers from this study, which provides a review of researches that have been carried out in planning and controlling of construction operation using visualization techniques and to address some issues relating to existing visualization techniques for MMC.

Numerical investigation of radon dispersion and dose assessment for typical ventilation schemes with an air purifier

Dong Xie, Chenhua Wang, Chuck W. Yu, Hanqing Wang

Summary: The study found that increasing the air supply speed of the purifier is an effective solution to reduce indoor radon pollution, especially when the purifier is placed in the middle of the room. Under mechanical ventilation conditions, the purification function is more effective when the air supply angle is 60 degrees.

Control of temperature and fume generation by cooking in a residential kitchen by ceiling radiative cooling and fume hood extraction

Wang Li, Hanqing Wang, Chengjun Li, Chuck Wah Yu

Summary: The heat radiation in a residential kitchen was simulated using CFD to evaluate the cooling effect of a radiant cooling ceiling panel and the pollution dispersion by the range hood and the air extraction system. The simulation results showed that the pollutant concentration in the kitchen during cooking was much lower than the Chinese standard criteria, and the radiant cooling in the ceiling played a significant role in maintaining a comfortable and healthy environment.

Air pollution and health risk assessment in Northeastern China: A case study of Jilin Province

Li Bai, Chunhui Li, Chuck Wah Yu, Zijian He

Summary: In recent years, air pollution in Northeastern China, specifically in Jilin Province, has been increasing due to coal burning and automobile emissions. By analyzing the data using ArcGIS, PCA, and non-carcinogenic risk models, it was found that pollutants have a temporal distribution trend of winter > spring > autumn > summer, with a spatial distribution decreasing from northwest to southeast. The main sources of air pollution were identified as coal-fired and automobile emissions.

Diffusion characteristics of the industrial submicron particle under Brownian motion and turbulent diffusion

Chengjun Li, Hanqing Wang, Chuck Wah Yu, Dong Xie

Summary: The study found that the main acting forces for submicron aerosol particles include drag force, Brownian force, Saffman lift force, and thermophoresis force. Brownian force cannot be ignored when the particle diameter is below 0.3 µm, promoting irregular particle movement and enhancing diffusion ability. Smaller particle sizes, higher heat source temperatures, and lower initial particle velocities all lead to increased horizontal dispersity (D-H).

Evaluation of the effect of cover layer on radon exhalation from building materials

Chenhua Wang, Dong Xie, Chuck Wah Yu, Hanqing Wang

Summary: The study conducted an experimental evaluation on radon exhalation from concrete blocks, finding that an increase in sand content led to higher radon exhalation rate, while an increase in thickness and water content reduced the rate. Additionally, indoor radon concentration and effective dose were evaluated for concrete blocks with cover layers, showing that adding a cover layer could reduce both indoor radon concentration and the radon dose on exposure to occupants.
