Summary: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy and prognostic value of matrix metallopeptidase-7 (MMP-7) and osteopontin (OPN) in biliary atresia (BA). The results showed that both MMP-7 and OPN may have contributory value in the diagnosis of BA, but they are far from being the gold standard. More prospective data and collaborative multi-center initiatives are needed to further validate their effectiveness.

Summary: This study investigated the utility of liver-to-psoas apparent diffusion coefficient ratios (LTPAR) and age-adjusted serum matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) for diagnosing biliary atresia (BA) in cholestatic infants. The results showed that LTPAR was significantly lower in BA infants, while age-adjusted MMP7 ratio was significantly higher. Considering both serum and imaging parameters may improve the diagnostic performance of BA in cholestatic infants.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic values of matrix metalloprotease-7 (MMP-7), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in children with biliary atresia (BA). The results showed that these biomarkers have good accuracy in differentiating BA from non-BA and diagnosing cholic stool in infants.

Summary: This study evaluated the serum level of matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) in infants with cholestasis and its diagnostic value in differentiating biliary atresia (BA) from other causes of cholestasis. The results showed that MMP7 had higher sensitivity and specificity compared to gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), making it a valuable biomarker for distinguishing BA from non-BA cholestasis.

Summary: This cross-sectional study found that serum matrix metalloproteinase-7 levels were significantly lower in infants with jaundice and parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease compared to those with confirmed biliary atresia. Serum metalloproteinase-7 may help exclude biliary atresia and thus reduce the need for invasive testing in infants with a history of parenteral nutrition.

Summary: This study found that the expression of FGF19 in the liver was significantly increased in patients with biliary atresia, and the level of FGF19 in the serum was related to the surgical outcomes and liver histopathology. Low levels of serum FGF19 can predict the liver survival rate in patients with biliary atresia. In addition, serum FGF19 was positively correlated with the levels of primary bile acids and ductular reaction.

Summary: Serum MMP-13 levels are significantly higher in patients with cSCC compared to healthy controls, particularly in those with invasive cSCC. Surgical removal of cSCC results in a significant decrease in serum MMP-13 levels. Serum MMP-13 can predict the invasiveness of cSCC and lymph node involvement with high sensitivity and specificity.

Summary: This study analyzed the serum levels of MMP-2, -7, and -9 in normal pregnant women and pre-eclampsia patients. The results showed that MMP-2 and MMP-7 levels were significantly higher in the pre-eclampsia group, while MMP-9 levels increased in the first trimester and after the onset of pre-eclampsia but decreased in the second and third trimesters. ROC curve analysis indicated that MMP-9, MMP-2, and MMP-7 were the best predictors of pre-eclampsia in the first, second, and third trimesters, respectively.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic performance of transient elastography (TE) with liver stiffness measurement (LSM) greater than 7.7 kPa for biliary atresia (BA) in different age groups, showing high diagnostic power across all age groups. LSM was positively correlated with the percentage of collagen fibers in liver specimens stained by picrosirius red.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignancy of the liver and is highly aggressive with poor prognosis. The development of HCC is influenced by the liver microenvironment, chronic necroinflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and immune responses. The complement cascade plays a central role in regulating immune responses in the liver and is implicated in inflammation, fibrosis, carcinogenesis, and HCC development.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms linked to abnormal cholangiocyte development in biliary atresia by generating biliary organoids from liver biopsies. The organoids showed evidence of halted epithelial development and structural defects in cholangiocyte-like cells from biliary atresia. Treatment with EGF and FGF2 resulted in the restoration of differentiation and functional markers, improved cell-cell junction, and decreased epithelial permeability in biliary atresia organoids.
