Isotopic measurement of iron requirements in sub-Saharan African children

Summary: The study showed that WHO/FAO iron requirements are adequate for healthy iron-sufficient children in rural Malawi, but iron-deficient children require additional bioavailable iron to correct their iron deficit. Iron absorption was not increased in iron-deficient children to correct their iron deficit, likely due to a lack of bioavailable dietary iron.

Deferasirox-associated Fanconi syndrome in adult patients with transfusional iron overload

Summary: This study presented cases of partial Fanconi syndrome associated with deferasirox in adults and suggested adjusting the dose of deferasirox based on ferritin levels and liver iron content. Monitoring with metabolic panel and urinalysis was found to be sufficient for detecting proximal tubular dysfunction associated with deferasirox.

Erythrocytapheresis in Children and Young Adults with Hemoglobinopathies and Iron Overload in Need of Iron Chelation Therapy

Summary: Limited data on erythrocytapheresis in children, adolescents, and young adults have been published. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of erythrocytapheresis, either alone or in combination with iron chelation therapy, in managing iron overload in patients with hemoglobinopathies. The results showed that erythrocytapheresis significantly reduced serum ferritin levels and had a better effect compared to iron chelation therapy alone. This study demonstrates that erythrocytapheresis is a promising therapy for treating transfusion-related iron overload.

Early adaptive responses in the skeletal muscle of young mice with hereditary hemochromatosis

Summary: In this study, using a mouse model of HH, it was found that although HH leads to systemic iron overload, only mild iron overload was observed in the skeletal muscle. Additionally, molecular markers related to mitochondrial function and autophagy were upregulated in the HH skeletal muscle, suggesting altered mitochondrial metabolism in response to iron overload. These early adaptive responses may play an important role in supporting mitochondrial health before the development of skeletal muscle dysfunction in HH.

Revealing the contribution of iron overload-brown adipocytes to iron overload cardiomyopathy: Insights from RNA-seq and exosomes coculture technology

The study found that iron overload has an impact on brown adipose tissue (BAT) and contributes to the onset of cardiomyopathy. RNA-Seq analysis and exosome coculture technology were used to reveal this process and provide new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cardiomyopathy.

The Interplay between Drivers of Erythropoiesis and Iron Homeostasis in Rare Hereditary Anemias: Tipping the Balance

Summary: Rare hereditary anemias (RHA) are characterized by impaired red blood cell production or decreased survival, often leading to disturbances in iron metabolism and erythropoiesis, resulting in iron overload or exacerbation of chronic anemia. Iron overload is a significant issue in both transfusion-dependent and non-transfusion-dependent patients with RHA, suggesting common defects in erythroid development linked to intrinsic iron metabolism defects. Key regulators involved in the interaction between iron and erythropoiesis are discussed in the context of RHA.

Clinico-Hematological Profile and Management of Children With Non-Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia (NTDT) at a Pediatric Center in Northern India

Summary: This study investigated the clinico-hematological profile, complications, and management of children with non-transfusion dependent thalassemia (NTDT) in northern India. The results showed that E beta-thalassemia was the most common cause of NTDT in this population. The most frequent single genotype observed was compound heterozygous for IVS1-5 (G>C) and codon 26 (G>A). 27% of children remained transfusion free on follow-up, while 30% needed occasional transfusions.
