Summary: Secondary poor graft function (sPGF) after haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients with acquired aplastic anemia (AA) has a cumulative incidence of 4.62% and is associated with lower 2-year overall survival. Later neutrophil engraftment and a history of refractory cytomegalovirus viremia are risk factors for sPGF.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency, risk factors, and outcomes of recurrent alcohol-associated hepatitis (rAH) in survivors of alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH). The results showed that rAH developed in approximately 8.8% of AH survivors and was associated with lower long-term survival. Marital status and medications for alcohol use disorder were found to be associated with a lower risk for rAH.

Summary: The study investigated whether Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is beneficial to aplastic anemia (AA) patients as a complementary therapy. It found that CHM-users had lower risks of overall and anemia-related mortalities when compared to non-users. Commonly prescribed herbs for AA patients include Ban-Zhi-Lian (BZL), Bai-Hua-She-She-Cao (BHSSC), Dang-Gui (DG), Huang-Qi (HQi), Xian-He-Cao (XHC), Gui-Pi-Tang (GPT), and Dan-Shen (DanS). Further studies are needed for these herbs in hematopoiesis-stimulating effect and large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCT) in bone marrow failure related diseases.

Summary: This study evaluated the mortality rates and risk factors, as well as functional outcomes, of patients with proximal femoral fractures. The results showed that surgical delay, anesthesia scores, and treatment methods were associated with survival. The one-year mortality rate was lower in patients with femoral neck fractures compared to other types of fractures.

Summary: This study retrospectively compared the characteristics and outcomes of patients with hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) and non-hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (non-HAAA) who underwent haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT). The results showed no significant differences in neutrophil engraftment time, overall survival rates, and liver event-free survival rates between HAAA and non-HAAA patients. These findings suggest that haplo-HSCT is a feasible treatment option for HAAA when HLA-matched donors are not available, with low risks of transplant-related mortality and complications.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of jejunal varix after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). The study found that the incidence of jejunal varix was significant and portal vein (PV) stenosis was a strong risk factor for the development of jejunal varix. Early placement of a PV stent and maintaining stent patency could reduce the risk of variceal bleeding in patients with PV stenosis.

Summary: This study found that the risk of VTE development in patients undergoing hepatectomy for colorectal cancer liver metastases is similar to that of patients undergoing hepatectomy for other indications. The only factor associated with VTE development was longer length of stay. VTE did not affect cancer-specific or overall survival in these patients.

Summary: This study developed two nomograms for predicting the prognosis of patients with T4a gastric cancer. The results showed that age, tumor size, race, histologic type, N stage, surgery status, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy were identified as independent prognostic factors for both overall survival and cancer-specific survival in these patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence and factors associated with late postpancreaticoduodenectomy hemorrhage (PPH), as well as the management strategy and outcomes. The results showed that late PPH was associated with 90-day mortality, and postoperative sepsis and certain biomarkers on day 3 were independent risk factors for late PPH. Predictive scores for PPH occurrence were also developed.

Summary: This study conducted a retrospective cohort analysis on patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) to compare their survival between those with infection and those without infection. The study found that patients with infection before transplantation had inferior survival compared to those without infection, highlighting the importance of prophylaxis and complete control of infectious complications before transplantation among SAA patients.

Summary: Airway complications are common after lung transplantation and can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. In this retrospective study of 137 patients who underwent lung transplantation, we found that 21.9% experienced postoperative airway complications. The most common complication was bronchial stenosis, and obesity and postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were identified as significant risk factors.

Summary: The study focused on analyzing the impact of an integrated health intervention on polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing in elderly people with multimorbidity. The results showed a significant decrease in the proportion of patients with two or more STOPP criteria and START criteria at the end of the intervention and at 6 months. Patients who experienced a decrease in STOPP criteria also showed a reduction in polypharmacy and falls at 6 months.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of individual genetic variations on the risk of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage (UGIH) induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The study found that certain specific gene polymorphisms interacted with NSAIDs, increasing the risk of UGIH. Additionally, the study identified larger risk increases associated with specific gene polymorphisms. These findings suggest that individual genetic characteristics can impact the efficacy and side effects of medications.

Summary: In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the immune dysregulation and immunosuppression may increase susceptibility to and severity of COVID-19. This study aimed to characterize COVID-19 infection in SLE patients, identify risk factors for susceptibility and severity, assess the presence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies, and analyze the cellular response. The findings showed that SLE patients were at higher risk of COVID-19 infection, and new risk factors for susceptibility and severity were identified. Despite immunosuppressive therapy, SLE patients were able to mount humoral and cellular responses to COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize and describe the incidence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients who started immunotherapy treatment in clinical practice. The majority of patients treated with anti-PD1/PDL1-based immunotherapy experienced immune-related ADRs, with skin disorders being the most common. Early identification and close monitoring are crucial for preventing and managing ADRs.

Summary: This study describes the characteristics of safety alerts issued by the Spanish Medicines Agency over a 7-year period and the regulatory actions they generated. The results showed that a total of 126 safety alerts were issued during this period, with 92 alerts reporting 147 adverse drug reactions (ADRs) involving 84 drugs. The study highlights the importance of spontaneous reporting of ADRs and the need to assess safety throughout the lifecycle of medicines.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and severity of lymphopenia following siponimod treatment. The study found that the incidence and severity of lymphopenia after siponimod treatment were higher than those reported in previous clinical trials. Therefore, the study emphasizes the need for closer monitoring of novel multiple sclerosis drugs in clinical practice, as well as larger and longer follow-up studies to properly characterize this risk.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the opinion of medical students about their learning process and the influence of their experience according to their year of medical degree. The study found that student motivation and teaching quality were generally high, and student-teacher interaction and new learning technological tools were important for student motivation. Late-year students showed a higher interest in becoming part of a medical team and in learning to write scientific articles. The study concluded that the year of career had little influence on the medical students' opinion on their learning process, and the use of new technologies and student-teacher interaction is essential for student motivation.
