Summary: Belching disorder (BD) is characterized by more frequent symptomatic belching compared to GERD. Supragastric belching (SGB) is more frequently associated with reflux in patients with GERD than in those with BD, with acidity potentially being related to GERD.

Summary: Supragastric belching is a common behavioral disorder associated with esophageal motility impairment and increased acid exposure. The impact of SGB on reflux is proportional to its severity. Diagnosis of SGB should be considered in patients with excessive belching and refractory reflux symptoms, and behavioral therapy can alleviate acid exposure and improve quality of life.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between reflux, fundoplication, and the angle of His using an experimental model. The results show that as the angle of His becomes wider, the esophago-gastric orifice area becomes larger, and a wider angle of His and a larger orifice area are independently correlated with more reflux.

Summary: Temperature and pH are important factors affecting the hydrolysis of beta-lactam antibiotics in water environments. An equation was employed to correct the Gibbs energy calculated in aqueous solutions to predict the effect of temperature on the hydrolysis kinetics and pathways of penicillin G. The predicted rate constants were of the same order of magnitude as the experimental values obtained under comparable pH and temperature conditions. The quantum chemical methodology described in this study has the potential to determine pH- and temperature-based two-dimensional hydrolysis rate models for predicting the persistence of beta-lactam antibiotics in cold waters.

Summary: In this study, a retrospective review was conducted on patients with extraesophageal symptoms and pathologic reflux who underwent LARS between February 2012 and July 2019. The study included 420 patients with a mean age of 61.7 years and BMI of 28.6 kg/m². Patients reported significant improvements post LARS at a mean follow-up of 18.9 months, with the majority demonstrating complete resolution of symptoms during follow-up surveys.

Summary: Recent research has shown that weakly acidic bile can also be carcinogenic in vivo, promoting premalignant lesions in the hypopharynx with oxidative damage and other cellular changes. Antacid therapy may have limited effect on reducing the risk of bile-related hypopharyngeal neoplasia.

Summary: The study demonstrates that integration of MSA in patients with prior gastric surgery yields similar outcomes compared to those without prior surgery, despite longer procedures, larger devices required, and increased likelihood of overnight stay.

Summary: The interaction between carboxymethyl cellulose and partially reacetylated chitosan soluble in acidic and alkaline aqueous media was studied through light scattering and isothermal titration calorimetry. It was found that polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) can be formed in the pH range of 6-8, but lose the ability to complexation in a more alkaline medium. The observed enthalpy of interaction was dependent on the ionization enthalpy of the buffer, indicating proton transfer from the buffer substance to chitosan and its additional ionization in the binding process. This study has potential implications for the development of biocompatible and biodegradable drug delivery systems.

Summary: This study aimed to report and compare the outcomes of different revisional techniques for failed anti-reflux surgery. By retrospectively analyzing patients who underwent revisional surgery between 2016 and 2021, it was found that conversion to RYGB may offer better resolution of reflux than RF, especially for obese patients.

Summary: The study revealed a decline in the utilization of anti-reflux surgery in Denmark from 2000 to 2017, with a dramatic increase in the use of proton-pump inhibitors. Age, comorbidity, and postoperative complications increased over time, while the use of laparoscopic technique remained high and mortality rates stayed consistently low.

Summary: This study investigated the association between preoperative anxiety and hypervigilance, as measured by the esophageal hypervigilance anxiety scale (EHAS), and improvement in GERD-specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and EHAS scores 6 months after laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (LARS). Results showed a significant decrease in GERD-HRQL, LPR-RSI, and EHAS scores at 6 months postoperatively. Higher preoperative EHAS scores were independently associated with greater improvement in GERD-HRQL and LPR-RSI.

Summary: The study found that anti-reflux mucosal intervention is an effective and safe endoscopic treatment for PPI-dependent GERD, but there may be negative effects in some patients. Further research is needed to evaluate treatment response and avoid the detrimental effect of PPI discontinuation.

Summary: This study investigates the anti-oxidative and anti-diabetic effects of electrolyzed weakly alkaline reduced water (EARW) at pH 8.5 on human kidney-2 (HK-2) cells. The results show that EARW at pH 8.5 rescues cell viability and reduces oxidative stress and inflammation markers in HK-2 cells induced with high glucose (HG). Moreover, EARW at pH 8.5 enhances antioxidant defenses and improves cellular metabolism in HG-induced HK-2 cells.

Summary: The study revealed that gastric belching is more common in children with physiological AET, while reflux-related gastric belching is more prevalent in patients with borderline and pathological AET. Supra-gastric belching is very rare in the pediatric population.
