Energetic protons and oxygen ions have been observed in Saturn's outer magnetosphere and can precipitate into Titan's atmosphere where they deposit energy, ionize, and drive ionospheric chemistry. Ion production rates caused by this precipitation are calculated using fluxes of incident 27 keV to 4 MeV protons measured by the Cassini MIMI instrument. We find that significant ion production rates exist in the 500 km to 1000 km altitude range and estimate associated electron densities of about 200-2000 cm(-3) in reasonable agreement with measured densities. We demonstrate that energetic oxygen ions do not penetrate below about 650 km, but they can also generate significant ionization. We suggest that a few percent of the oxygen flux is converted to negative O ions as a consequence of charge exchange collisions, which might help explain the negative ions observed near 960 km by the Cassini CAPS instrument.

An Explanation of the Nightside Ionospheric Structure of Venus

Stephen H. Brecht, Stephen A. Ledvina

Summary: Hybrid simulations of Venus have successfully reproduced nightside structures that are consistent with observations from spacecraft such as the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. The simulations show that the structure is generated when the P-e ambipolar electric field aligns with the local IMF direction, and the orientation of the IMF controls the location of the tail structure on the nightside. The agreement between the simulation results and data from spacecraft observations increases confidence in the validity of the simulations.

Ions Measured by Voyager 1 Outside the Heliopause to ∼28 au and Implications Thereof

Konstantinos Dialynas, Stamatios M. Krimigis, Robert B. Decker, Matthew E. Hill

Summary: This study reports in situ ion measurements from Voyager 1 from 2000 to 2020, identifying radial outflow of energetic ions in the heliosheath. The intensity spectrum shows a power-law form in energy with a spectral index of about -1.4, indicating leakage of ions from the heliosheath into interstellar space. Future modeling efforts should consider this ion population for communication between the heliosheath and the local interstellar medium.

A Revised Understanding of the Structure of the Venusian Magnetotail From a High-Altitude Intercept With a Tail Ray by Parker Solar Probe

Summary: One of the major discoveries of NASA's Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe is the formation of comet-like tail rays in the nightside ionosphere of Venus. The observations from both missions provide evidence of the altitude range and structure of the Venusian Ionotail Rays. Combined data analysis and hybrid modeling have contributed to a unified understanding of the magnetotail of Venus.

Summary: This paper reports on the energy dependence of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) as measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) instrument on the Voyager 1 spacecraft. The study found that there is a decreasing trend in the amplitude of second-order anisotropy with increasing energy during anisotropy episodes.

Fourier Analysis of Magnetic Fields in the Ionosphere of Mars

T. E. Cravens, O. Hamil, A. Renzaglia, S. A. Ledvina, S. K. Howard

Summary: The main sources of the magnetic field in the Martian ionosphere are the solar wind interaction with the planet and remnant crustal magnetization, mainly in the southern hemisphere. This study used Fourier analysis to quantify, interpret, and compare the magnetic fields in the ionosphere and solar wind, suggesting plasma movement from the pile-up region to the ionosphere. The findings also indicate the possible creation of a magnetic structure within the ionosphere itself.
