Summary: By analyzing the preserved isotopes in the shell, the habitat depth and metabolic carbon fraction of N. macromphalus were determined. The habitat depth of N. macromphalus was found to be approximately 140 m pre-hatching and 370 m post-hatching, and the fraction of metabolic carbon was reconstructed as 21% pre-hatching and 14% post-hatching. However, morphological changes did not coincide with changes in isotopic values, except at hatching and maturity onset.

Summary: The dynamics of methane and nitrous oxide in coastal coral reef areas are not well understood. The study in the Great Barrier Reef showed oversaturated CO2 due to calcification and riverine sources, oversaturated CH4 from nearshore biogenic sources and probable offshore aerobic production, and generally undersaturated N2O. The GBR was a slight CO2 and CH4 source and N2O sink during the study, with further research needed to constrain diurnal, seasonal, and spatial dynamics.

Summary: The aim of future space missions is to find evidence of life beyond Earth on icy moons. This study investigates the presence of molecular and isotopic biomarkers in submarine cold seep systems to gain understanding of potential carbon cycles in the icy worlds' oceans. The analysis of lipid biomarkers and carbon isotopes allows us to infer different carbonate origins and discuss carbon sources and sinks in analogous icy-moon oceans. The isotopic analysis of carbon may be crucial for detecting biosignatures in icy-world carbon sinks.
