This paper focuses on the physico-chemical interactions of cutin monomers with clay smectites. Adsorption of cutin monomers was measured, and esterification and reconstitution were studied using Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and mass spectrometry (MS) analyses. Adsorption of a common cutin monomer, omega-dihydroxypalmitic acid (diHPA) to smectite was found to be affected by its interactions with exchangeable cations. Inner-sphere complexation was observed for Fe3+-montmorillonite, and nontronite. Outer-sphere complexes were observed for Ca2+- and Wyoming Na+-montmorillonite. XRD measurements showed that cutin monomers were intercalated between smectite layers, and MS results demonstrated their enhanced esterification on the smectite surfaces (as compared to monomer solution). This study suggests that cutin monomers can be reconstituted and esterified on the smectite surfaces to form stable organo-mineral complexes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abiotic Transformation of Lamotrigine by Redox-Active Mineral and Phenolic Compounds

Marina Karpov, Bettina Seiwert, Vered Mordehay, Thorsten Reemtsma, Tamara Polubesova, Benny Chefetz

Summary: The anticonvulsant drug lamotrigine is a challenging environmental pollutant that can be transformed and eliminated through oxidation reactions with redox-active soil minerals and phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds, such as vanillic acid, were found to enhance the transformation of lamotrigine more efficiently, generating multiple transformation products.

Summary: Permanently charged and ionizable organic compounds (IOC) are a diverse group of contaminants. Existing models for neutral compounds are inadequate for describing the sorption and mobility of IOC. Better models and monitoring data are needed to assess the mobility of IOC and guide further research.

Wastewater-derived organic contaminants in fresh produce: Dietary exposure and human health concerns

Summary: Irrigation with reclaimed wastewater helps conserve freshwater sources, but also exposes agricultural products to emerging contaminants. A study in Israel found that the highest exposure to wastewater-borne contaminants occurred through the consumption of leafy vegetables. While no human health concerns were observed in average and high exposure scenarios, extreme exposure to certain contaminants from produce irrigated with reclaimed wastewater may pose a threat to human health.

Interplay of stress responses to carbamazepine treatment, whitefly infestation and virus infection in tomato plants

Summary: Reclaimed wastewater containing CBZ can induce a stress response in tomatoes, especially in root tissues. While soluble sugars react to CBZ in both leaves and roots, stress-related amino acids and proteins show significant changes in roots but not in leaves. CBZ may weaken plant stress response but attract whiteflies due to increased sugar content in leaves, and it can also reduce the amount of TYLCV through autophagy activation.
