Growing evidence suggests that metabolic syndrome (MetS) has both genetic and environmental bases. We estimated the heritability of the MetS and its components in the families from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). We investigated 904 nuclear families in TLGS with two biological parents and at least one offspring (1565 parents and 2448 children), aged 3-90 years, for whom MetS information was available and had at least two members of family with MetS. Variance component methods were used to estimate age and sex adjusted heritability of metabolic syndrome score (MSS) and MetS components using SOLAR software. The heritability of waist circumference (WC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TGs), fasting blood sugar (FBS), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) as continuous traits after adjusting for age and gender were 27, 46, 36, 29, 25, 26 and 15%, respectively, and MSS had a heritability of 15%. When MetS components were analysed as discrete traits, the estimates of age and gender adjusted heritability for MetS, abdominal obesity, low HDL-C, high TG, high FBS and high blood pressure (BP) were 22, 40, 34, 38 and 23%, respectively (P<0.05). Three factors were extracted from the six continuous traits of the MetS including factor I (BP), factor II (lipids) and factor III (obesity and FBS). Heritability estimation for these three factors were 7, 13 (P<0.05) and 2%, respectively. The highest heritability was for HDL-C and TG. The results strongly encourage efforts to identify the underlying susceptibility genes.

TPO antibody in euthyroid pregnant women and cognitive ability in the offspring: a focused review

A. Amouzegar, E. N. Pearce, L. Mehran, J. Lazarus, M. Takyar, F. Azizi

Summary: Studies suggest that maternal thyroid autoimmunity may have adverse effects on the neuropsychological and intellectual development of offspring, however, results are inconsistent. Variations in the tools and measurements used to assess neurodevelopment or IQ across studies may contribute to the lack of consensus in findings.

Impact of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome on Silent Coronary Artery Disease and Cardiovascular Events; A Long-term Population-based Cohort Study

Summary: This study explored the impact of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), and found that PCOS status did not increase the risk of silent coronary artery disease (CAD). However, women with a history of silent CAD had a higher incidence of CVD events. PCOS status independently reduced the incidence of CVD, regardless of silent CAD or traditional risk factors.

The role of different lipid measures for incident hypertension during more than 12-year follow-up: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study

Summary: The study found significant associations between TAG, TAG/HDL-cholesterol, and TC/HDL-cholesterol and a higher risk of incident hypertension, while HDL-cholesterol was associated with a lower risk. These associations remained independent of baseline blood pressure categories and other factors, suggesting their potential role in predicting hypertension.

Does Adding Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Improve the Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score in Women? Data from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether adding adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) to the Framingham risk score improves the prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in women. The results showed that adding APOs can improve the accurate risk estimation of CVD beyond established risk factors, and women with a history of multiple APOs are at higher risk of experiencing CVD events.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effects of recognized lifestyle factors, expressed as a healthy lifestyle score, on the risk of metabolic syndrome in Tehranian adults. The findings highlight the importance of adherence to modifiable healthy lifestyle factors in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome.

The role of nutrition in the development and management of gestational diabetes among Iranian women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Nazanin Moslehi, Fatemeh Rahimi Sakak, Farshad Teymoori, Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani, Parvin Mirmiran, Fereidoun Azizi

Summary: This study reviewed 49 publications on the association between nutrition and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Iranian women. The pooled analyses showed that GDM women had lower serum vitamin D levels and higher serum iron, ferritin, and hemoglobin levels compared to non-GDM women. Some dietary patterns were found to be associated with the odds of GDM. Vitamin D supplementation early in pregnancy may help prevent GDM, but there is insufficient evidence to recommend a specific dietary pattern for GDM prevention in Iranian women.

The influence of environmental conditions on sex ratio in a dioecious plant Pistacia vera L

Effat Ghadirzadeh-Khorzoghi, Masoomeh Jannesar, Zahra Jahanbakhshian-Davaran, Maryam Moazzam-Jazi, Abolfazl Lotfi, Ali Tajabadi Pour, Seyed Mahdi Seyedi

Summary: This study determined the progeny sex ratio in four pistachio populations using molecular markers and found a female-biased sex ratio. Under stressful conditions, the sex ratio can deviate towards males, and this deviation increases with the intensity of the stress. Females are more affected than males based on physical measurements. These findings have economic importance for introducing more tolerant pistachio gender and can be used for breeding programs and reforestation.

Summary: This study combines multiple microarray studies to identify genes and pathways specific to each subtype of breast cancer. Through the analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), critical genes and pathways associated with BC subtypes were identified. The results were validated using an independent breast cancer RNA-sequencing dataset, showing high concordance in specific genes related to certain subtypes.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between nutrient intakes and gender in three generations of Tehranian adults. The results showed significant correlations in nutrient intakes between fathers and sons, as well as mothers and daughters. However, there were no significant correlations between parents and adult offspring. Younger offspring had higher intakes of total fat and trans-fatty acids compared to their parents.
