Summary: The occurrence of pseudomales in C. semilaevis is a response to environmental changes, with male-biased miRNA expression reflecting adaptation to environmental changes. The heterogeneity of adjacent mediums in semen affects sex-biased miRNA expression profiling in C. semilaevis and could provide valuable insights for biomarker development.

Summary: This experiment investigated the sex differences in fatty acid composition of Chinese tongue sole and found significant differences, especially in the gonad. Testes had higher DHA levels but lower levels of 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9 than ovaries. Additionally, the phenotypic sex had a greater impact on the fatty acid composition in pseudomales compared to the genetic sex.

Summary: This study characterized the sperm piwi-interacting RNAs profiles of Cynoglossus semilaevis and identified differential piRNAs associated with sex development and methylation. Five of the piRNAs showed sex bias and could be used as male-specific molecular biomarkers for C. semilaevis. Additionally, the study implied the possibility of transgenerational inheritance of sex-biased piRNAs in sperm.

Summary: A novel molecular marker was discovered for identifying the genetic sex of Cynoglossus semilaevis using the RAA-LFD system, with consistent results from two evaluation methods. Sensitivity analysis showed the efficacy and reliability of the RAA-LFD system from 108 to 101 copy numbers, and its combination with LFD resulted in more efficient and convenient sex determination.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in sperm miRNA profiles between male and pseudomale of C. semilaevis, with some miRNAs closely related to sex differentiation, gametogenesis, and the maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics. These findings suggest that non-coding RNA may play an important role in transgenerational inheritance.

Summary: The study on the Chinese tongue sole revealed similar expression patterns of 179 genes between different sexes at various developmental stages, with 14 modules identified to be closely correlated with female differentiation, particularly one module that exhibited female-biased expression across all stages. This research provides insights into sex differentiation in fish and offers a genomic rationale for screening candidate genes, specifically W-linked genes, involved in the female differentiation process.

Summary: The study established a recombinase-aided amplification (RAA)-based method for fish sex identification using Cynoglossus semilaevis as an example, which combines two result visualization approaches with distinct features - capillary electrophoresis (CE) and lateral flow dipstick (LFD). The RAA-LFD method is operationally simple, rapid (around 30 minutes), and holds great potential for point-of-need applications in fisheries and other fields.

Summary: Fish sex determination can be influenced by environmental temperature, and the heat shock proteins (HSPs) play important roles in this process. In this study, we investigated the role of hsc70 and hsc70-like genes in high temperature response and sex determination/differentiation using Chinese tongue sole as model. Our results showed that hsc70 and hsc70-like are key regulators linking high temperature signals with sex differentiation by regulating the expression of sex-related genes.

Summary: This study revealed the potential mechanisms of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in regulating reproduction in the ovary of half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) through RNA sequencing and functional enrichment analysis, including involvement in cell cycle, signaling pathways, and reproduction-related pathways. Experimental results demonstrated that lncRNAs might be involved in biological processes by modulating the expression of genes related to reproduction.

Summary: This study describes the conflicting roles of nascent sex chromosomes on introgression patterns in an experimental hybrid swarm. The researchers found that a large block containing overlapping inversions on the neo-sex chromosome acted as the strongest barrier to introgression. The study also investigated the interplay of sex chromosome drive, heterospecific pairing incompatibility, neo-Y disadvantage, and neo-X advantage in generating the observed introgression patterns.

Summary: This study investigated the gene expression patterns during gonad differentiation in the half-smooth tongue sole, revealing differentially expressed genes associated with sex differentiation and gonad development. Trend analysis showed that gene expression patterns varied over time, with either common features or significant sexual dimorphism. Transcript structure analyses identified both sex and time differences among samples, clarifying the significant sexual differences during early development and providing insight into sex differentiation and development mechanisms.

Summary: In this study, the researchers found differential expression of igfbp genes in Chinese tongue sole, which is an economically important marine flatfish. These genes play a role in growth and development, and interact with key molecules involved in these processes. The study also revealed differences in gene expression and DNA methylation patterns in different tissues, as well as the differential effects of estradiol and testosterone on igfbp gene expression.
