The zebrafish leopard phenotype (leo) displays abnormal pigmentation and shows increased anxiety-like behavior. The neurochemical changes associated with this anxious phenotype are not known. Here, we demonstrate that leo show increased anxiety-like behavior in the light/dark box and in the novel tank test. This anxious phenotype is rescued by acute treatment with a dose of a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, that is inactive in wild-type animals. Moreover, leo show decreased tissue levels of serotonin, increased serotonin turnover and slightly increased monoamine oxidase activity. These results suggest that the anxious phenotype observed in leo zebrafish is caused by a decrease in serotonin uptake. This work could open an important avenue in defining the neurochemical underpinning of natural variation in anxiety disorders.

Putative Activation of the CB1 Cannabinoid Receptors Prevents Anxiety-Like Behavior, Oxidative Stress, and GABA Decrease in the Brain of Zebrafish Submitted to Acute Restraint Stress

Waldo Lucas Luz, Mateus Santos-Silva, Patrick Bruno Cardoso, Nadyme Assad, Edinaldo Rogerio da Silva Moraes, Alan Barroso Araujo Grisolia, Danielle Valente Braga, Luana Ketlen Reis Leao, Suellen Alessandra Soares de Moraes, Adelaide da Conceicao Passos, Evander de Jesus Oliveira Batista, Amauri Gouveia, Karen R. H. Matos Oliveira, Anderson Manoel Herculano

Summary: Acute stress can induce anxiety-like behavior, increased lipid peroxidation, and decreased GABA levels in the brains of zebrafish. Stimulation of CB1 receptors can prevent stress-induced anxiety and oxidative stress, as well as maintain GABA levels in the brain. This suggests that CB1 receptors may be a potential target for treating anxiety disorders triggered by acute stress.

Pseudorandom full-field electroretinograms reflect different light adaptation mechanisms

Juliana Bizerra Assis, Alodia Brasil, Terezinha Medeiros Goncalves Loureiro, Veronica Gabriela Ribeiro da Silva, Anderson Manoel Herculano, Dora Fix Ventura, Luiz Carlos Lima Silveira, Jan Kremers, Givago Silva Souza

Summary: This study investigated the amplitude and time course of pseudorandom ffERG during light adaptation. Results showed that different ffERG components had different mechanisms of adaptation to retinal light. The K-1 ffERG was influenced by retinal mechanisms with intermediate- to long-term light adaptation, while the K-2.1 ffERG was influenced by retinal mechanisms with a fast light adaptation course.

5-HT2C agonists and antagonists block different components of behavioral responses to potential, distal, and proximal threat in zebrafish

Summary: The role of serotonin (5-HT) receptors in vertebrates in response to aversive stimuli remains unclear due to the existence of multiple specific receptors. Different aversive stimuli elicit responses at various threat levels, such as exploration, defensive behaviors, and freezing reactions. Exposure of adult zebrafish to a conspecific alarm substance showed that agnostic and antagonist of the 5-HT2C receptor had different effects on responses to different levels of threat.

Summary: This study presents an alternative method for determining GAT activity in tissue preparations of the central nervous system using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. The results demonstrate that this method provides a specific measure of GAT activity and validates the Na+- and temperature-dependent uptake of GABA.

Clinical aspects of malarial retinopathy: a critical review

Ketan Raymond Nair Brodeur, Anderson Herculano, Karen Oliveira

Summary: The discovery of malarial retinopathy is important for accurately diagnosing cerebral malaria. However, the lack of recognition by the World Health Organization has led to significant false-positive diagnoses. Raising awareness of malarial retinopathy can improve the accuracy of cerebral malaria diagnosis.

Acai (Euterpe oleracea) pulp-enriched diet induces anxiolytic-like effects and improves memory retention

Batista, Gilmara de Nazareth Tavares Bastos, Karen Renata Matos Herculano Oliveira, Domingos Luiz Wander ley Picanco Diniz, Anderson Manoel Herculano

Summary: An acal-enriched diet had no effect on body weight and food intake, but increased blood glucose levels after 31 days. In contrast, a similar fat-enriched diet led to weight gain and reduced food intake. The acal-enriched diet preserved motor performance, had anxiolytic effects, and improved memory retention in rats. Additionally, this diet reduced lipid peroxidation levels in the hippocampus.

The role of serotonin in modulating common waxbill behaviour

Beatriz C. C. Saldanha, Paulo A. A. Silva, Caio Maximino, Goncalo C. Cardoso, Sandra Trigo, Marta C. C. Soares

Summary: Serotonin modulates the behavior of common waxbills through the 5-HT1A receptor pathway. The SSRI fluoxetine reduces aggression, activity, and feeding, while the other serotonergic enhancer (8-OH-DPAT) and the antagonist WAY 100,635 have no significant effect on behavior.

Cochlear glial cells mediate glutamate uptake through a sodium-independent transporter

Summary: In this study, we investigated the activity of sodium-dependent and sodium-independent glutamate uptake mechanisms in primary cochlear glial cells cultures obtained from newborn Balb/C mice using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Our results showed that sodium-independent glutamate transport has a significant contribution in cochlear glial cells, similar to other sensory organs, but not in tissues less susceptible to continuous glutamate-mediated injuries. The expression of the xCG- system in CGCs suggests its role in controlling extracellular glutamate concentrations and regulation of redox state to preserve auditory function.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which can lead to microvascular damage in the retina causing diabetic retinopathy. This study aimed to evaluate the potential protective effect of acai on retinal function in mice with induced diabetes. The results showed that treatment with acai prevented a significant decrease in visual electrophysiological responses in diabetic animals.
