Environmental changes, such as changes in the coastal topography due to Eurasian plate movements, climate oscillation during the Pleistocene, and alteration of ocean currents, have complicated the geographical structure of marine species and deepened their divergence between populations. As two widely distributed species of crustacean (Oratosquilla oratorio and Eriocheir japonica), weak differences were expected due to their high dispersal potential of planktonic larvae with ocean currents. However, results showed a significant genetic divergence between north of China and south of China in the study. In addition, the estimated north-south divergence time (27-30.5 Myr) of mantis shrimp was near the time of the Himalayan movement, and the China-Japan clade divergence time (10.5-11.9 Myr) of mitten crabs was also coincident with the time of the opening of the Sea of Japan. Thus, we hypothesized that environmental changes in the coastal topography contributed to the marine species divergence. Furthermore, based on phylogenetic analysis, network analysis and haplotype distribution, we surmised that mitten crabs originated from a population with the oldest haplotype (H6) and then divided into the north and south populations due to the recent Eurasian plate movements and ocean currents. And lineage of Japan originated from the north population for the opening of the Sea of Japan. While O. oratorio was guessed to originate from two separate populations in the China Sea. The results of star-like network, negative values in neutral test, and Tajima's D statistics of two marine species supported a recent rapid population expansion event after the Pleistocene glaciations. Summary: This study successfully assembled the first chromosome-level genome of the blue king crab, revealing the reasons behind its large genome size and showing its close relationship with Eubrachyura crabs. Population history analysis indicated a sharp decline followed by a significant increase in the effective population of the blue king crab. Furthermore, gene families related to developmental pathways were found to be expanded in the genome, contributing to the environmental adaptation and unique body plan evolution of the blue king crab.

Summary: This study in the coastal area of the Yellow Sea, China, identified a 500-year soil chronosequence and examined the changes in soil properties and macrofaunal communities in croplands of different ages. The results showed significant increases in soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus, while soluble salinity and pH decreased along the soil age gradient. Soil macrofaunal communities were closely associated with soil age, driven mainly by changes in soil nutrient status.

Summary: The experiment of rice-based double cropping system in Jiangsu Province, China revealed that adopting rotation regimes with lower intensity of land use can improve soil macrofaunal biodiversity and trophic structure complexity, especially in fields with tiny vetch and fallow. Soil organic carbon plays a key role in shaping soil environment and regulating soil macrofaunal communities, and has been significantly improved through the experiment.

Summary: This study compared the differences in soil properties and stoichiometry among five different land-use types in a reclaimed coastal area. The results showed significant variation in soil properties and stoichiometry among the land-use types. Paddy and vegetable garden soils had higher organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents, while upland and upland-forest soils had lower contents. The stoichiometric characteristics presented a narrow range of ratios, similar to the stoichiometry of average Chinese cropland soils.

Dual, Three-Level, Quasi-Z-Source, Indirect Matrix Converter for Motors With Open-Ended Windings

Mingzhu Guo, Yushan Liu, Baoming Ge, Xiao Li, Anibal T. de Almeida, Fernando J. T. E. Ferreira

Summary: In this paper, a novel variable-voltage, variable-frequency, dual, three-level, quasi-Z-source, indirect matrix converter topology is proposed, including a detailed description of a modulation method and a control strategy for three-phase motors with open-ended windings. The proposed power drive system supports bidirectional power flow and has a combined control of DC-link voltage and output AC voltage frequency. The experimentally validation on a 4-kW power drive system shows that the proposed system can double the voltage output gain and reduces common-mode component, low-order harmonic content, peak values, and dv/dt of the motor phase voltage, leading to various advantages including lower winding insulation voltage stress, lower harmonic losses in the motor, and ride-through capability over voltage sags in the mains.

Summary: Urban green areas are vital for biodiversity in urban ecosystems. Pill bugs, as ecological bio-indicators, are widely distributed and can represent soil health. This study examines the relationship between pill bugs and soil properties in urban green spaces. The characteristics of pill bug populations vary significantly among different habitats, with pH and soil organic matter being key factors in explaining the variation in body size. Positive correlations are observed between body length and body weight.

Summary: In this study, a classification of Spartina alterniflora invasion stages on the coast of the Yellow Sea in China was conducted, and its impacts on Bullacta caurina distribution were examined. The results showed that invasion increased vegetation coverage and organic matter content, while decreasing porewater salinity. The density of B. caurina decreased after the initial invasion stage of S. alterniflora. Additionally, organic matter content and chlorophyll a concentration were identified as predictors of B. caurina density.

Summary: The study used IVT-SAPAS sequencing to analyze the dynamic changes of APA sites during adipogenesis in bovine subcutaneous preadipocytes and intramuscular preadipocytes. The results showed that APA plays an important role in adipocyte differentiation, and UTR-APA switching genes have different trends, with intramuscular preadipocytes tending to use shorter 3'UTR for differentiation. TRIB3, WWTR1, and INSIG1 play important roles in intramuscular preadipocyte differentiation.

Summary: This study investigates the genetic diversity and natural selection of the Pfama-1 gene in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Cameroon. The study finds a considerable nucleotide and haplotype diversity, as well as specific mutations in Cameroonian isolates. Genome-wide regulation of Pol II, FACT, and Spt6 occupancies by RSC in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Emily Biernat, Mansi Verma, Chhabi K. Govind

Summary: RSC is an essential ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It regulates nucleosome-depleted regions (NDRs) by sliding flanking nucleosomes away from NDRs. Depletion of RSC leads to nucleosome encroachment in NDRs and transcription initiation defects. The study compared the effects of catalytic-dead Sth1 and rapid depletion of Sth1 on transcription. Rapid depletion of Sth1 reduces recruitment of TBP and Pol II, while the catalytic-dead mutant exhibits a severe reduction in TBP binding but accumulates Pol II in coding regions. The results suggest a role for RSC in transcription elongation and termination processes.

miR-124-3p regulates the involvement of Ptpn1 in testicular development and spermatogenesis in mouse

Lvjing Luo, Lishuang Sun, Shu Li, Huiting Liu, Zhengyu Chen, Shi Huang, Yinyin Mo, Genliang Li

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of Ptpn1 and miR-124-3p in testicular tissues of mice and investigated their regulatory relationship. The results showed that Ptpn1 expression was up-regulated in adult mouse testis compared to juvenile mouse testis, while miR-124-3p expression showed an opposite pattern. Further analysis suggested that the down-regulation of miR-124-3p may contribute to the high expression of Ptpn1 in adult mouse testis.

Summary: This study found that exosomes secreted by young BMSCs can promote the healing of tendon-bone interface after rotator cuff tears. These exosomes can improve extracellular matrix remodeling, osteogenic differentiation, angiogenesis, and stemness of tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs). The exosomes from young BMSCs have better effects compared to those from aged BMSCs.
