Context: Myostatin (MSTN) is a member of the TGF-beta superfamily of signal transduction proteins, which plays an important role in muscular growth and lipid metabolism. Objective: To study the association of myostatin gene polymorphisms with obesity in Chinese north Han human subjects. Design: 297 healthy and 606 over-weight/obesity Chinese north Han subjects were selected as healthy control group and overweight/obesity group, respectively. The methods of DNA Sequencing, Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and TaqMan (R) probe were used to screen myostatin gene SNPs and clarify genotype in every individual. Results: Total 11 SNPs in MSTN gene were identified by DNA sequencing and three SNPs including rs35781413 (G/A), rs3791783 (A/G) and rs3791782 (A/G) were selected for further study in total 903 samples. The results showed that the frequency of AA genotype of rs3791783 A/C SNP was significantly higher (56.4% vs. 50.8%) and the frequency GG genotype was significantly lower (3.2% vs. 6.7%) in overweight/obese patients than in normal weight subjects. A logistic regression analysis under a recessive inheritance model (AA + AG vs.GG) demonstrated that the Odd ratio for AA + AG vs.GG were 1.985 (95% CI 1.078- 3.643; P = 0.029). Among three genotypes of rs3791783, the subjects with AA genotype have much more higher body weight, BMI, waist circumference, TC. TG and LDL-C than those with GG genotype. Conclusions: Our data firstly suggest that genetic variant rs3791783 A/G in myostatin gene are associated with obesity. The A allele carriers in rs3791783 SNP have an increased susceptibility to obesity compared with the G allele carriers. Participants with AA genotype in rs3791783 SNP site will have higher risk suffered from overweight or obesity than those with GG genotype. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Rhenium modification on NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst and effects on the hydrodesulfurization reaction route selectivity of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene

Qiang Wei, Wenbin Huang, Xiaodong Liu, Anqi Li, Pengfei Zhang, Zhusong Xu, Zhiqing Yu, Xiaohan Wang, Haoran Liu, Yasong Zhou

Summary: A series of Re modified NiMo/Al2O3 hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with different contents of Re2O7 were synthesized using stepwise impregnation and co-impregnation methods. The effects of Re modification and impregnation methods on the catalysts' physical-chemical properties were characterized. The results revealed that Re modification improved the crystal morphologies, pore structures, and acid sites of the catalysts. Furthermore, the HDS evaluation showed that Re modification effectively enhanced the conversions, route selectivity, and even selectivity towards 3,3'-DMCHB of 4,6DMDBT, with the stepwise impregnation method exhibiting a more significant effect compared to co-impregnation.

Summary: This study considers a two-echelon supply chain with partial cross ownership (PCO) and explores the strategy of the retailer to share private demand information with the supplier via cheap talk. We find that when the proportion of partial cross holding shares is moderate, the retailer can truthfully disclose private demand information, benefiting both the retailer and the supplier.

Quantum Cloud with Communication, Computing, Caching, and Cipher (4C) Resource Coordination

Qingcheng Zhu, Yongli Zhao, Xiaosong Yu, Jie Zhang

Summary: Cloud services relying on communication, computing, and caching resources are supported by datacenter networks (DCNs). The security of these services is under threat due to the emergence of quantum computers. Quantum key distribution (QKD) technology offers information-theoretically secure secret key sharing between remote users. A quantum cloud, achieved through QKD-secured cloud datacenter networks, provides communication, computing, caching, and cipher resources for data transmission, processing, storing, and encryption. To address the coordination problem of the newly emerged 4C resources, a 4C-oriented control architecture is designed, and innovative heuristic algorithms for securing service function chains are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms outperform the baseline in terms of service success ratio.

Some degree-based topological indices and (normalized Laplacian) energy of graphs

Zimo Yan, Xie Zheng, Jianping Li

Summary: In this paper, the relationships between some vertex-degree-based topological indices (including the general Randic index, the first Zagreb index, and the forgotten index) and the energy of graphs are established by using the concept of the energy of a vertex. Bounds on the energy of graphs containing no isolated vertices are given in terms of the first Zagreb index and the forgotten index. Furthermore, bounds on the normalized Laplacian energy in terms of two particular cases of the general Randic index are obtained.

Summary: Chemical approaches play a crucial role in the design, synthesis, control and engineering of small molecules, polymers and networks, combining covalent bonds and non-covalent interactions to establish complex structures for specific functions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous polymers that integrate organic units into highly ordered structures through polymerization using covalent bonds for primary order structures and non-covalent interactions for high order structures in a one-pot reaction system. This Primer provides a comprehensive overview of the field of COFs, covering chemistry, physics, materials and applications, aiming to present a concise yet complete picture of the field and addressing key fundamental issues with future directions in mind.

Genome-wide regulation of Pol II, FACT, and Spt6 occupancies by RSC in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Emily Biernat, Mansi Verma, Chhabi K. Govind

Summary: RSC is an essential ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It regulates nucleosome-depleted regions (NDRs) by sliding flanking nucleosomes away from NDRs. Depletion of RSC leads to nucleosome encroachment in NDRs and transcription initiation defects. The study compared the effects of catalytic-dead Sth1 and rapid depletion of Sth1 on transcription. Rapid depletion of Sth1 reduces recruitment of TBP and Pol II, while the catalytic-dead mutant exhibits a severe reduction in TBP binding but accumulates Pol II in coding regions. The results suggest a role for RSC in transcription elongation and termination processes.

miR-124-3p regulates the involvement of Ptpn1 in testicular development and spermatogenesis in mouse

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of Ptpn1 and miR-124-3p in testicular tissues of mice and investigated their regulatory relationship. The results showed that Ptpn1 expression was up-regulated in adult mouse testis compared to juvenile mouse testis, while miR-124-3p expression showed an opposite pattern. Further analysis suggested that the down-regulation of miR-124-3p may contribute to the high expression of Ptpn1 in adult mouse testis.
