Summary: This study focuses on the techno-economic-environmental analysis of the integrated production of first-generation bioethanol, bioelectricity, and biodiesel in a Brazilian sugarcane biorefinery, utilizing MO from the yeast R. toruloides for biodiesel production. The integrated biorefinery processes 4.0 million tons of sugarcane per harvest, producing 71.7 m3/h of bioethanol, 2.55 m3/h of biodiesel, and 86.3 MW of surplus bioelectricity. Life cycle assessment indicates lower environmental impact compared to first-generation bioethanol plants. The integrated process demonstrates positive economic performance, making it a feasible industrial option with promising outcomes.

Summary: The study simulated a process to produce bioethanol from sugarcane residues and then convert it to biobutadiene, aiming to improve the exergoeconomic performance by reducing the investment cost of biomass pretreatment and diminishing the exergy destruction cost of the saccharification/fermentation subsystem. Efforts to enhance the process exergoeconomically should focus on optimizing these key areas to achieve higher efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Summary: The study explores the potential of using biodiesel from highly productive heterotrophic microalgae as a sustainable alternative to diesel fuel in sugarcane biorefineries. While the production cost is relatively high due to equipment and carbon sources, the process can become economically profitable with the consideration of carbon credits. The integration of microalgae biodiesel production with sugarcane processing can significantly reduce carbon emissions, making it a viable solution for reducing environmental impact.

Summary: The connectivity of green infrastructure is crucial for enhancing biodiversity in cities. Revitalising brownfields as a Nature Based Solution is being prioritised, supporting cities' goals of densification and greenery development. This paper introduces a model using Leipzig, Germany as an example to identify and prioritize the role of revitalised and existing brownfields in green infrastructure connectivity. Comparing metrics, brownfields serve as important stepping stones (13%), and revitalised brownfields significantly contribute to global connectivity (87%), similar to Leipzig's central parks. The spatial-explicit network approach presented in this paper offers a planning tool to prioritize brownfields and assess the added value of their renaturing by identifying strategic corridors, connectivity relevance, and potential alternative paths. Furthermore, the study proposes a standardized evaluation of NBS strategies using freely available software tools and high-resolution canopy data.
