Purpose: To evaluate the association of cardiovascular risk factors with wall thickness of the ascending and descending thoracic aorta in the general population. Materials and Methods: The study included 1,176 individuals (523 women) 21-83 years old from the Study of Health in Pomerania without history of stroke or myocardial infarction. Aortic wall thickness (AWT) was determined by cine magnetic resonance imaging. The associations of AWT with the cardiovascular risk factors male sex, age, smoking, body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, hemoglobin A(1c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides were assessed by multivariable linear regression models, and interaction effects were tested. Results: Male sex (beta = .086, P < .001), age (beta = .006, P < .001), and BMI (beta = .013, P < .001) were positively associated with the AWT of the ascending aorta. Male sex (beta = .105, P < .001), age (beta = .006, P < .001), current smoker (beta = .044, P = .010), BMI (beta = .013, P < .001), and HDL-C (beta = .057, P = .008) revealed a positive association with AWT of the descending aorta. LDL-C (beta = -.024, P = .009; beta = -.018, P = .010) was inversely associated with the AWT of the ascending and descending aorta, respectively. Triglyceride levels (beta = .024, P = .027; beta = .018, P = .024) showed a positive association with the AWT of the ascending and descending aorta, respectively, in men, but not in women. Concluions: Established cardiovascular risk factors, including male sex, older age, smoking, high BMI, and high triglyceride levels, were associated with increasing thoracic AWT of the ascending and descending aorta. High HDL-C and low LDL-C levels were correlated with AWT.

Summary: The study aims to examine the association of different APOE alleles with T2DM and MetS, as well as the influence of hs-CRP on these associations. The results show that E4 carriers have a lower odds of developing T2DM, while both E2 and E4 carriers have higher odds of developing MetS. The association between E4 alleles and T2DM is moderately attenuated after adjusting for hs-CRP levels.

Summary: In this study, genetic and clinical determinants of abdominal aortic diameter (AAD) were investigated, revealing associations of the LDLRAD4 and SLC22A20 genes with AAD, as well as establishing a causal relationship between pulse pressure, triglycerides, height, and AAD. These findings offer insights into new biology and highlight gene regions in mechanisms previously implicated in the genetics of other vascular diseases.

Summary: Plasma levels of myeloid differentiation factor-2 (MD-2), a co-receptor of toll-like-receptor 4 (TLR4), predict mortality independently in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). This study shows that MD-2 contributes to immune activation and inflammatory status in DCM patients by promoting monocyte activation and endothelial cell-mediated monocyte recruitment.

Summary: Physical activity and sedentary behavior have genetic components, and this study identified 99 genetic loci associated with self-reported physical activity, leisure screen time, and sedentary behavior. Some genetic variants were found to affect muscle function and possibly protect against exercise-induced muscle damage. Mendelian randomization analyses also revealed that the beneficial effects of reducing sedentary behavior and increasing physical activity on health outcomes may be mediated or confounded by body mass index.

Summary: This study investigated sedentary behavior and physical activity levels in pregnant women. The results showed that pregnant women spent most of their day in sedentary activities, and only half of them met the recommendations for physical activity in the second and third trimester. The study suggests that sedentary behavior and physical activity should be given more attention in clinical practice and research to motivate pregnant women to adopt an active lifestyle.

Sex-specific associations of cardiorespiratory fitness and galectin-3 in the general population

Summary: The study found that cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) was only associated with Gal-3 levels in men, while CRF adjusted for body weight was related to Gal-3 levels in women and men. Results suggest that the adverse consequences of low CRF may be mediated by Gal-3. Further research is needed to understand the sex-specific association between CRF and Gal-3 and their clinical relevance.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between the mother's socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, life satisfaction, and the delivery of a small for gestational age (SGA) infant. The study found that lower education and smoking during pregnancy were risk factors for delivering an SGA infant. Additionally, mothers of SGA infants were more frequently dissatisfied with their employment and financial status.
