Summary: The shift towards lesser-polluting and carbon-efficient energy systems has made biodiesel an attractive option for sustainable bioenergy. However, the lack of feedstock flexibility and reliance on vegetable oils for production poses a challenge in resource allocation, leading to potential competition with food supply. Exploring low-grade non-edible oil sources and improving catalyst selection for glycerolysis reactions are key factors in enhancing biodiesel profitability and sustainability in the future.

Summary: This article investigates the use of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) functionalized with different concentrations of sulfonic groups in the esterification of glycerine with fatty acids. The effects of temperature, free fatty acids/glycerine ratio, and catalyst concentration on the reaction yield and by-products are analyzed. The hydrophobic/hydrophilic behavior of the catalysts plays a crucial role in both the activity and selectivity of the desired products. The results highlight the importance of designing catalysts with amphiphilic properties for this system.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of simple zinc(II) salts as effective catalysts for the esterification of fatty acids with long-chain alcohols and polyols. The catalytic activity depends on the nature of the counterion, with salts containing poorly coordinating or basic Bronsted anions showing the most effectiveness. The catalyst can be easily recovered and reused multiple times without loss of activity, making the process sustainable and efficient.

Summary: This study aimed to develop more accurate methods for measuring and specifying VFAs in bovine rumen, comparing the conventional method with an alternative CER method. The CER method showed improved accuracy in detecting C3+ VFAs, especially butyric acid, compared to the conventional method, providing quantitative proof of its superior performance. This suggests that the CER method is recommended for analyzing VFAs in rumen, particularly butyric acid and other C3+ VFAs.

Summary: The study aimed to produce biodiesel from animal oil as a non-edible feedstock. Acid transesterification resulted in a biodiesel yield of 90 wt.%, while alkali transesterification of esterified fats resulted in a yield of 97.2 wt.%. Biodiesel properties met standards but biodiesel from animal fats is less stable for oxidation, especially in cold weather.

Summary: Three types of sulfonic acid group functionalized ionic liquids (SAILs) with different catalytic groups and lipophilicity were synthesized and characterized. The catalytic activities of these SAILs were studied in an esterification reaction, and microwave heating was used. The results showed that the SAIL with a lipophilic alkyl chain had the best performance due to its increased solubility in the reaction mixture. Microwave heating was more effective than conventional heating. Recycling experiments demonstrated that these novel SAILs could be reused without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Summary: The study revealed that Atlantic halibut larvae efficiently incorporate dietary fatty acids through monoacylglycerols, but their ability to absorb and incorporate fatty acids when provided as free fatty acids or bound to triglycerides or phospholipids seems to be low. Esterification into phospholipids is the main metabolic fate for dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, and the larvae have a capacity for metabolizing dietary fatty acids through elongation and desaturation processes. However, the larvae showed a reduced ability to biosynthesize EPA and DHA, highlighting the importance of adequate dietary supply for proper larval development.

Summary: HZSM5 zeolites with a hierarchical pore structure were prepared using a top-down methodology by treating a microporous one with a sodium hydroxide solution. These materials were used as supports for platinum to produce bifunctional hydroconversion catalysts, resulting in significantly improved activity and selectivity in n-hexadecane hydroconversion compared to untreated zeolites. Extensive characterization was carried out using various techniques to study the properties of the supports and catalysts.

Summary: The increasing demand for chemical products has led to the search for new sources of non-fossil raw materials, particularly lignocellulosic biomass and oilseed biomass. Brazil, with its large territorial extensions and high biomass productivity, can benefit from the use of lignocellulosic raw materials. This review discusses the catalytic routes to obtain alkyl levulinate from the esterification reaction of levulinic acid with alcohols, as well as the application of the esters as additives to fuels and lubricants.
