Browsing rates and ratios provide reliable indices of ungulate impacts on forest plant communities

Ungulate browsing affects many plant species, shifting patterns of relative abundance, plant community diversity, and ecosystem processes. Despite the strength and diversity of ungulate impacts, we lack comprehensive methods and a unified network for tracking and comparing ungulate impacts across the Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes Network Office (GLN) of the National Park Service has identified white-tailed deer as a keystone herbivore that could threaten the health of Great Lakes forests. To supplement their permanent vegetation monitoring program, GLN monitors deer and moose browsing pressure on woody and herbaceous plants at nine national parks in the region. We used data from these surveys to investigate relationships among patterns of browsing across species and sites with the goal of inferring efficient and reliable indicators of ungulate impacts. We also investigated the relationships between patterns of browsing on woody vegetation and among-site variation in the presence and abundance of understory species. Our results showed that ungulates clearly prefer certain woody species, but these vary across the region in response to local community composition. Ungulate impacts on understory species are correlated with woody browsing impacts but also vary with local ecological conditions. To build a more efficient and accurate composite indicator of overall ungulate impacts, we combined data on woody plant browsing with data on the abundance of specific understory species to infer overall levels of threat from ungulate browsing. Such combined indicators improve our ability to monitor the impacts of ungulate browsing, particularly if such methods can be expanded and standardized across the region. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Multiple spatial scales affect direct and indirect interactions between a non-native and a native species

Summary: Plant-plant interactions play a significant role in community assembly and species responses to environmental change. The experimental results showed an interactive effect between non-native and native plant abundance at plot level on plant performance, indicating that indirect effects at larger spatial scales can influence smaller scales. Additionally, both species exhibited enhanced performance with increasing abundance of the non-native species, implying the presence of positive density dependence effects and other underlying mechanisms.

Does Grazing Affect Soil Carbon in Subtropical Humid Seminatural Grasslands?

Summary: This study assessed the impacts of cattle grazing on soil carbon in seminatural subtropical humid rangelands in Florida. The results showed that grazing increased soil carbon stocks in the top layer of soil, decreased root biomass, but did not affect litter amount. There were no significant differences in SOC and TC concentrations between grazed and ungrazed plots.

Long-term response of wetland plant communities to management intensity, grazing abandonment, and prescribed fire

Summary: Isolated, seasonal wetlands within agricultural landscapes are important ecosystems, but they are currently being affected by agricultural management. This study found that wetlands within intensively managed pastures have lower native plant diversity and higher nonnative species diversity. It also showed that cattle exclusion and prescribed fires are not enough to restore wetlands in intensively managed pastures.

Research Article Post-Restoration Plant Community Changes in Grazed and Ungrazed Seasonal Wetlands in Florida

Summary: Seasonally inundated wetlands are threatened ecosystems that require difficult restoration methods to mimic historical shifts. In this study, the responses of agriculturally impacted seasonal wetlands in central Florida to hydrological restoration were evaluated. The restoration led to gradual changes in vegetation, with lower cover of non-wetland species and higher cover of wetland species. Species richness was higher in unrestored wetlands, and restoration did not significantly affect beta diversity and floristic quality. Cattle exclusion showed limited effects on post-restoration diversity metrics. This study emphasizes the need for active restoration approaches and long-term monitoring to achieve successful wetland restoration.

Summary: Seasonal niche partitioning is crucial for maintaining biodiversity in plant communities, but the influence of climate and global change drivers on seasonal niche partitioning is still limited. This study used compositional data from grassland sites worldwide to investigate the relationships between climate variability and intra-annual species segregation, and to assess the impact of nutrient enrichment on seasonal diversity. The results showed that nutrient enrichment increased seasonal diversity and altered the dynamics of specific functional groups in grassland communities.

Self-thinning of Scots pine across Europe changes with solar radiation, precipitation and temperature but does not show trends in time

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of site and climate on the self-thinning line in Scots pine forests in Europe. The results showed that species tolerance, temperature, and precipitation influenced the slope of the self-thinning line. In terms of the intercept, latitude and radiation had compensating effects. Time did not show significant trends in the self-thinning line. The study highlights the need to adapt management strategies and models based on self-thinning to different latitudes. Climate change has not yet significantly impacted the self-thinning trajectory, but a continuous rise in temperature and high precipitation may accelerate the self-thinning process and result in increased biomass accumulation.

Positive interactions in shaping neighborhood diversity during secondary forests recovery: Revisiting the classical paradigm

Summary: Secondary forests play a crucial role in ecosystem dynamics and biodiversity recovery. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying secondary succession in a restored secondary forest and found that deciduous tree species transition from diversity accumulators to repellents as they progress through different life history stages, while evergreen tree species can act as accumulators or remain neutral. The study also revealed the effects of density dependence on the mortality and regeneration of different tree species, and highlighted the importance of early-arriving tree species in facilitating the establishment and diversity of late-arriving counterparts.

Are western European oak forests man-made constructs? The pedoanthracological perspective

Summary: Fagus sylvatica L. is a competitive tree in European temperate deciduous forests, but often sporadic or absent in present-day stands where Quercus spp. are dominant. Through soil charcoal analysis in the Lorraine Plateau in France, the presence of Fagus and Quercus in mature Quercus stands was confirmed. Radiocarbon dating results indicated that historical forest management caused the replacement of Fagus by Quercus, starting from the Bronze Age.

Using high-resolution images to analyze the importance of crown size and competition for the growth of tropical trees

Summary: This study examines the influence of canopy structure on tropical tree growth using data collected through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and field measurements. The results show that combining UAV and field data can improve the prediction of tree diameter increment. Diameter at breast height and crown area are complementary predictors, and crown-based competition indices significantly enhance prediction models. The calibrated model at one site can accurately predict growth at another site.

Natural seeding as an alternative to planting in black spruce-lichen woodlands

Summary: Regeneration failures in the closed-crown boreal forest, resulting in the creation of open lichen woodlands, can be restored through clear-cutting, scarification, and natural seeding. Clear-cutting combined with scarification promotes seedling establishment, and scarification creates suitable microsites for germination. Seedling growth in lichen woodlands is higher when logging and scarification are combined, but lower compared to feather moss stands. Afforestation through natural seeding following scarification could be a cost-effective option for restoring lichen woodlands.

Effects of forest management on the key fungal decomposer Fomes fomentarius in European beech forests - Lessons from a large-scale experiment

Summary: The study aimed to assess the effects of different forest management strategies, dead wood types, and microclimates on Fomes fomentarius. The results showed that the occupancy of Fomes fomentarius was lower in control stands, while the percent cover occupied on snags under a closed canopy was higher. Increasing the number of snags and maintaining dense forest canopies could enhance the presence of Fomes fomentarius as well as provide important microhabitats for various arthropods.

The distribution of forage and cover patches affects moose browsing pressure, and this relationship has been explored in conifer-dominated stands but not in hardwood-dominated landscapes.
