The proximal and distal parts of the femur show the differences between the sexes. Head diameter and the breadth of the epicondyle of the femur are known to distinguish males from females. The proximal end of the femur is studied to determine sex using discriminant analysis but; its distal end is not done. This study aims to develop an equation specific to Koreans by using the medial and lateral condyles of the femur, and to demonstrate the usefulness of equations for specific population groups. We used three-dimensional images from 202 Korean femurs. Twelve variables were measured with a computer program after the femurs were in alignment. Eleven variables showed a statistically significant difference between the sexes (P < 0.01). The most accurate equation used width of the medial and lateral condyles (WDC), with of the medial condyle (WMC), depth of the lateral condyle (DLC), and depth of the intercondylar notch (DIN) (94.1%), and is as follows: D = 0.336 x WDC + (-0.097) x WMC + (-0.153) x DLC + 0.372 x DIN - 20.912. The second highest accuracy was 90.1% for the width dimensional group and WDC. This study shows that the medial and lateral condyles of the femur should be helpful for sex determination in situations where the skull and pelvis are missing and part of the femur is available. The study also demonstrates the need for different equations for different population groups. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Movement of the sacroiliac joint: Anatomy, systematic review, and biomechanical considerations

Ho-Jung Cho, Dai-Soon Kwak

Summary: This study reviewed previous research on the anatomy and biomechanics of the sacroiliac joint (SIJ), finding that there is limited movement in the SIJ but also significant pelvic incidence (PI) changes. The minimum and maximum movement angles for the SIJ were found to be 0.01 degrees and 2.27 degrees respectively, while PI changes ranged from 0 to 9 degrees. Further study on SIJ movement and PI changes from a biomechanical perspective is recommended for a better understanding.

Morphometric Evaluation of Detailed Asymmetry for the Proximal Humerus in Korean Population

Eunah Hong, Dai-Soon Kwak, In-Beom Kim

Summary: Although proximal humerus fractures account for a small percentage of all fractures, the bilateral differences of the proximal humerus are significant, with males showing more differences than females. Using contralateral data as a template for repairing an affected proximal humerus may still be possible.

Potential Instability and Malfunction of Knee Joints with Vastus Medialis Impairment after Total Knee Arthroplasty

Yongkyung Lee, Hai-Mi Yang, Jinju Jang, Dai-Soon Kwak, Jungsung Kim, Heoung-Jae Chun, Dukyoung Jung, Dohyung Lim

Summary: The study found that vastus medialis (VM) impairment in knee joints undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may increase the risk of posterior dislocation of the tibia. The altered muscle distribution can lead to changes in joint reaction forces and moments, potentially causing instability and functional issues.

Kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty restores more native medial collateral ligament strain than mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty

Summary: KA TKA was found to restore a more native amount and distribution of MCL strain compared to MA TKA. This suggests that KA TKA may lead to better performance and more normal knee sensations for patients.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the relationship between femoral tunnel length, graft bending angle, and stress with respect to tunnel entry position and ASR during ACLR surgery. Results showed that ASR did not affect femoral tunnel length, with smaller ASR leading to higher graft bending angle and larger ASR causing greater stress in the graft.

Is the Fovea Ulnaris Truly Isometric during Forearm Rotation?-An In Vivo Retrospective Analysis Using Superimpositions of Three-Dimensional Reconstructions

Seung-Han Shin, Joonyoung Park, Dai-Soon Kwak, Yang-Guk Chung

Summary: This study investigated the isometricity of the fovea ulnaris during forearm rotation in vivo. Three-dimensional reconstruction models of wrist CT images were used to analyze the position of the ulnar head and rotation center. The results showed that the fovea ulnaris is not consistently isometric during forearm rotation, with the rotation center shifting ulnarly with increasing translation of the ulnar head or forearm rotation.

Medial Meniscus Posterior Root Repair Restores Contact Pressure and Contact Area to Its Native State Even After Opening-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy: A Cadaveric Biomechanical Study

Hyung Jun Park, Moon Jong Chang, Eunah Hong, Tae Woo Kim, Chong Bum Chang, Tae Soo Bae, Dai-Soon Kwak, Seung-Baik Kang

Summary: The effect of medial meniscus posterior root (MMPR) repair during opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) in terms of contact pressure (CP) and contact area (CA) was investigated using human cadaveric knee specimens. Repairing the torn MMPR decreased CP and increased CA, regardless of whether OWHTO was performed. The biomechanical advantage of repairing torn MMPR is maintained, irrespective of the degree of correction during OWHTO.

Restoration of the Joint Line Configuration Reproduces Native Mid-Flexion Biomechanics after Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Matched-Pair Cadaveric Study

Dai-Soon Kwak, Yong Deok Kim, Nicole Cho, Yong In, Man Soo Kim, Dohyung Lim, In Jun Koh

Summary: The study demonstrates that kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty (KA TKA) better reproduces native knee biomechanics during mid-flexion compared to mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (MA TKA). Restoration of the joint line after KA TKA effectively replicates the native mid-flexion rollback and medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain, resulting in superior outcomes and more natural knee sensations for patients.
