The probiotic potential, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of Enterococcus durans LAB18s, a strain capable of selenium bioaccumulation, was investigated. E. durans LAB18s showed resistance to acid conditions, showing ability to survive in the presence of simulated gastric juice at pH 3. This bacterium also survived in the presence of simulated intestinal juice with or without bile salts, and did not show hemolytic activity. The antimicrobial activity of culture supernatant and intracellular extract of E. durans LAB18s was tested against different pathogenic microorganisms, namely Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas hydrophila and Corynebacterium fimi. E. durans LAB18s exhibited a broad inhibitory spectrum, except to B. cereus, S. aureus and S. Enteritidis when the culture supernatant was used, and to S. Typhimurium when the intracellular extract was tested. The antioxidant activity of culture supernatant and intracellular extract of E. durans LAB18s was analyzed by ABTS.(+) and DPPH methods, and only culture supernatant presented ability to scavenge both radicals. Both culture supernatant and intracellular extract showed high antioxidant activity when analyzed by TBARS method. E. durans LAB18s could be useful as a source of dietary selenium supplementation. Phytoremediation of metals by colonizing plants developed in point bars in the channeled bed of the Diluvio Stream, Southern Brazil

Vinicius Maggioni dos Santos, Leonardo Capeleto de Andrade, Tales Tiecher, Robson Andreazza, Flavio Anastacio de Oliveira Camargo

Summary: Urban rivers are heavily polluted with metals from human activities, but colonizing plants growing in point bars show potential for phytoremediation by filtering and accumulating contaminants. Plants in Diluvio Stream in Southern Brazil have higher bioaccumulation potential, indicating their ability to stabilize and accumulate metals, providing a natural solution for environmental pollution mitigation.

Soybean crop incorporation in irrigated rice cultivation improves nitrogen availability, soil microbial diversity and activity, and growth of ryegrass

Filipe Selau Carlos, Naihana Schaffer, Roberta Fogliatto Mariot, Rodrigo Schmitt Fernandes, Cacio Luiz Boechat, Luiz Fernando Wurdig Roesch, Flavio Anastacio de Oliveira Camargo

Summary: The genetic improvement of soybean cultivars more adapted to lowlands and new drainage technologies have led to the increased cultivation of soybean in rotation with irrigated rice in South America. The study found that soybean cultivation resulted in greater mineral N availability, higher extracellular enzyme activity, and microbial diversity compared to irrigated rice. These changes had a direct impact on the development of ryegrass plants, which exhibited higher dry biomass production.

Copper bioconcentration and bioaccumulation in different eucalyptus species and their impact on plant physiology

Alex Negrini, Rodrigo Ferreira da Silva, Clovis Orlando Da Ros, Paola Daiane Welter, Ana Paula da Silva, Daniel Boeno, Robson Andreazza

Summary: This study investigated the bioconcentration and bioaccumulation of copper in eucalyptus species and their effects on plant physiology. The results showed that eucalyptus species have a high potential for growing in soils with high copper concentrations and for copper bioremediation. The root system is the main site of copper accumulation, with Eucalyptus saligna showing the least toxicity and better physiological effects. Copper levels increased with higher doses, particularly in Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna species. These species have a high capacity for copper bioaccumulation in the root system and are suitable for growing in copper-contaminated sites, contributing to the reduction of free copper in the environment.
