Summary: The pathophysiology of schizophrenia is still not well understood. Genetic factors and oxidative stress play key roles in its development and progression. Oxidative stress leads to the continuous production of oxidation products, such as AGEs and AOPPs, which interact with their receptors, amplifying the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In this study, plasma levels of AGEs and AOPPs were found to be significantly higher in schizophrenia patients compared to controls, confirming their involvement in mental disorders. Antioxidant nutraceuticals and a healthy lifestyle could reduce oxidative stress and alleviate schizophrenia symptoms.

Summary: Oxidative stress caused by the imbalance between reactive oxygen species formation and antioxidant scavenger system's activity plays a significant role in the development and complications of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). Overexpression of ROS-generating enzymes and uncontrolled ROS formation are associated with accelerated atherosclerosis in animal models, while overexpression of ROS scavenger systems reduces or stabilizes atherosclerotic lesions. Circulating biomarkers derived from lipid and protein oxidation have been identified as independent predictors of ASCVD in humans. Antioxidant supplementation in animal models reduces ROS and attenuates atherosclerotic lesions, but large human trials or prospective studies have failed to show athero-protective effects of antioxidant supplementation. However, long-term consumption of antioxidant-rich diets has been shown to reduce ASCVD in humans.

In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
