There are no internationally agreed quality standards for the measurement of stature, weight, and body composition. This lack of agreement constrains the quality of work in nutrition and must be addressed in order to build systemic capacity within the Scaling Up Nutrition agenda. There is a need to reach agreement and define standards of performance and the required training to be able to demonstrate the competency of those responsible for making the measurements. This, together with the adoption of standardized protocols, traceable reference materials, quality assurance frameworks, and publication guidance, would mark an important first step in improving the conduct and interpretation of measurements of growth and body composition.

Chelsia Gillis, Sarah J. Davies, Francesco Carli, Paul E. Wischmeyer, Stephen A. Wootton, Alan A. Jackson, Bernhard Riedel, Luise V. Marino, Denny Z. H. Levett, Malcolm A. West

Summary: The study revealed that the literature on prehabilitation lacks standardized and validated nutritional assessment, often lacks evidence-based nutrition interventions, and is typically implemented without monitoring or evaluating the nutrition intervention.

Screening, assessment and management of perioperative malnutrition: a survey of UK practice

L. S. Matthews, S. A. Wootton, S. J. Davies, D. Z. H. Levett

Summary: Perioperative malnutrition is common and can lead to increased mortality, complications, and healthcare costs. A survey of Perioperative Medicine Leads in the UK showed that while many use screening tools, only around half refer patients at nutritional risk to dietitians. Improved assessment and management of malnutrition in the perioperative period could lead to better outcomes for patients undergoing elective surgery.

Summary: This study observed bacterial infections in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and found that non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis infections are associated with AECOPD, but may have different mechanisms in triggering exacerbations.

Detecting low-intake dehydration using bioelectrical impedance analysis in older adults in acute care settings: a systematic review

Saleh Alsanie, Stephen Lim, Stephen A. Wootton

Summary: The study found that the sensitivity and specificity of bioelectrical impedance in detecting low-intake dehydration varied considerably depending on the total body water percentage threshold used to ascertain dehydration status. While some studies supported the utility of the technique compared to conventional measures of hydration status, the scarcity of literature and inconsistency between findings make it difficult to determine the value of bioelectrical impedance for detecting low-intake dehydration in older inpatients.

Summary: People with motor neuron disease often struggle to consume enough calories, leading to malnutrition and weight loss. Energy prediction equations are not accurate in estimating resting energy expenditure and metabolic index at an individual level.

Summary: Patient experience of nursing care is crucial for safety and treatment outcomes, but the lack of evidence-based nursing guidelines for patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 may lead to variations in quality and costs.
