Summary: Cepharanthine (CEP), extracted from Stephania cepharantha Hayata, has shown to have anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory effects. It mitigates weight loss and disease activity index, reduces malondialdehyde content and increases reduced glutathione content in DSS-induced mice. In LPS-induced macrophages, CEP reduces oxidative stress and inhibits inflammatory response by activating AMPKα1/AKT/GSK-3β/NRF2 pathway.

Summary: This study investigated the potential protective effects of pectin, a fermentable fiber, in combination with quercetin and chlorogenic acid, two bioactives found in stone fruits, on ulcerative colitis (UC). The results suggest that quercetin and chlorogenic acid, in the presence of pectin, may have beneficial effects on major pathways involved in UC, such as reducing inflammation and promoting injury repair. However, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and potential benefits of these compounds.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect and potential mechanism of tetrapeptide from maize (TPM) and probiotic treatment on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in C57BL/6J mice. The results indicated that TPM and probiotics reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels and restored the gut microbiota, effectively alleviating the adverse effects of UC. Furthermore, the combination of TPM and probiotics had a more pronounced effect.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in maintaining cellular functions and are involved in various cellular processes. Dysfunction of mitochondria has been linked to complex disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The impact of mitochondrial dysfunction on IBD, including its role in intestinal mucosa, immune cell populations, mucosal repair, microbiota-brain-gut axes, and the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer, is discussed in this review.

Summary: Drug-specific therapeutic approaches for colorectal cancer have significantly improved patient health, but there is a need for personalized treatments based on genetic and epigenetic tumor profiles. Circulating tumor DNA analysis has proven inaccurate, but detecting circulating tumor cells and protein analysis of exosomes show promise. Blood liquid biopsy has potential for the future, if results align with tissue analyses.

Summary: This study demonstrates gender differences in the expression and effects of immune modulatory molecules BMPs during the inflammatory process of rheumatoid arthritis in an experimental animal model. Male rats exhibited earlier disease onset and recovery but a worse clinical course in the early phases, while female rats showed worsening clinical symptoms during remission. Females exhibited higher expression related to synovial inflammation during remission, with stronger correlations with serum cytokines, hippocampal, and neurogenesis.

Summary: This study investigates the clinical significance and predictive role of the Lung Immune Prognostic Index (LIPI) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients eligible for immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy. It also examines the association between COVID-19 infection and the course and outcome of NSCLC treatment. The results show that LIPI has predictive power and clinical relevance as a biomarker in advanced NSCLC, and patients infected with COVID-19 have a higher survival rate.
