Cervical cancer is the second most common female cancer worldwide, and it remains a challenge to manage preinvasive and invasive lesions. Fruit-based cancer prevention entities, such as flavonoid and their derivatives, have demonstrated a marked ability to inhibit preclinical models of epithelial cancer cell growth and tumor formation. Here, we extend the role of naringin-mediated chemoprevention to that of cervical carcinogenesis. The present study sought to investigate the therapeutic potential effect of naringin on apoptosis in human cervical SiHa cancer cells. Viability of SiHa cells was evaluated by the MTT assay, apoptosis and mitochondrial transmembrane potential by flow cytometry, and pro-apoptotic related genes by Real-time quantitative PCR. Naringin showed a 50% inhibition of SiHa human cervical cancer cells at a concentration of 750 mu M. SiHa cells exhibited apoptotic cell death, intranucleosomal DNA fragmentation, morphological changes and decline in the mitochondrial transmembrane potential. In addition, administration of naringin increased the expression of caspases, p53 and Bax, Fas death receptor and its adaptor protein FADD. These results suggest that the induction of apoptosis by naringin is through both death-receptor and mitochondrial pathways. Taken together, our results suggest that naringin might be an effective agent to treat human cervical cancer. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fabrication of cellulose nanocrystal-decorated hydroxyapatite nanostructures using ultrasonication for biomedical applications

Jegan Athinarayanan, Vaiyapuri Subbarayan Periasamy, Ali A. Alshatwi

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanocrystal/hydroxyapatite nanostructure (CN/HAP) hybrids were successfully synthesized using Phoenix dactylifera lignocellulosic biomass and eggshell as bio-precursors. The nanohybrids were characterized and found to be non-toxic and biocompatible. Furthermore, the nanohybrids showed increased activity and gene expression related to bone formation. These findings suggest the potential importance of agro-waste-derived CN/HAP hybrids in bone tissue engineering applications.

Summary: This study investigates the antibacterial activity and mechanism of action of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on β-lactam-resistant Gram-negative food pathogens. The results demonstrate that ZnO NPs have broad-spectrum action against these strains, inducing oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, membrane damage, and ultimately leading to cell death.

Antioxidant potential of biotransformed green tea catechin metabolites and their impact on peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Rajapandiyan Krishnamoorthy, Abdulraheem R. Adisa, Vaiyapuri Subbarayan Periyasamy, Anis Ahamed, Mohammad A. Alshuniaber, Ali A. Alshatwi

Summary: Catechin absorption, bioavailability, and distribution in human tissue and excretion were found to be low, and colonic bacteria were able to degrade catechin. In this study, the antioxidant potential of bacterial transformed catechin metabolites was assessed, and it was observed that these metabolites had lower antioxidant activity. The expression of antioxidant genes GPX1 and POR also showed different patterns between pure catechin and bacterial transformed catechin metabolites.

Co-exposure to commercial food product ingredient E341 and E551 triggers cytotoxicity in human mesenchymal stem cells

Jegan Athinarayanan, Amjad A. L. Khaibary, Vaiyapuri Subbarayan Periasamy, Khalid A. Alatiah, Ghalia Shamlan, Omer N. Alsawmahi, Ali A. Alshatwi

Summary: Several nano-toxicological studies have assessed the potential health risks of engineered nanostructures, but little is known about nanoscale ingredients in food products. In this study, we examined the physicochemical characteristics of food product isolate E341/E551 and the effects of nanoscale E341 and E551 on human mesenchymal stem cells. Our findings suggest that co-exposure to E341/E551 can increase ROS levels and deplete mitochondrial membrane potential. Long-term over-exposure to E341/E551 may trigger health risks in humans.

Summary: Nanostructured materials are widely used in the food industry, but the impact of food-grade nanostructured materials on biological systems is still not well explored. This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of nanoscale ingredients in commercial food products and found that the E341/E171 combination exhibited toxicity on human mesenchymal stem cells at high concentrations. These findings highlight the need for further research on the potential impact of E341/E171 on biological systems.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that diets rich in plant-based foods and beverages may have positive effects on human health in reducing the risk of chronic diseases. This study investigated the association between polyphenol-rich beverage intake and mental health outcomes among adults in the Mediterranean area. The results showed that moderate intake of coffee and tea was associated with lower perceived stress and depressive symptoms, while regular coffee and moderate/regular red wine drinkers were less likely to have depressive symptoms. However, no significant associations were found for the intake of these beverages and sleep quality.

Summary: Nanomedicine is a technology that can improve human health by using nanoscale materials to detect, treat, and prevent diseases. In this study, g-C3N4/silver sulfide nanohybrids were synthesized using a low-cost and environmentally friendly method. The morphological properties of the nanohybrids were examined using SEM and TEM, and their average particle size distribution was determined using DLS analysis. The nanohybrids were modified with folic acid for the photothermal treatment of breast cancer cells, and the results showed high cell death rates. These findings suggest that the modified nanohybrids may be a valuable tool for fighting cancer.

Summary: Research suggests that consuming plant-based foods and beverages rich in (poly)phenols may play a role in preventing cognitive disorders. This study examined the association between the consumption of (poly)phenol-rich beverages, such as wine and beer, resveratrol intake, and cognitive status in older adults. The findings showed that higher consumption of red wine was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment, while only the highest intake of white wine was linked to lower odds of cognitive impairment. No significant results were found for beer intake. Higher resveratrol intake was also associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment. In conclusion, consuming (poly)phenol-rich beverages may have a positive impact on cognition in older adults.

Summary: This study assessed the relationship between the level of food processing and prostate cancer severity. It found that individuals who consumed more unprocessed/minimally processed foods were less likely to have greater prostate cancer severity, while a borderline association was found between higher consumption of ultra-processed foods and greater prostate cancer severity. Association of CYP2R1 and CYP27B1 genes with the risk of obesity and vitamin D metabolism in Saudi women

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism involved in silencing the CYP2R1 gene in normal and obese Saudi women patients. The results showed that hypermethylation of specific sites in the CYP2R1 gene was significantly associated with body weight, BMI, waist circumference, LDL and total cholesterol levels. Additionally, a correlation between a specific site in the CYP27B1 gene and vitamin D levels was observed. This study indicates a potential role of hypermethylation in the regulation of gene expression and the risk of obesity and vitamin D metabolism.
