In this study 10 commercial top selling cigarette brands in Spain have been machine smoked and the mainstream smoke has been analyzed. Multifunctional analysis has been satisfactorily employed to correlate the effect of the main design features of the cigarettes including amount of tobacco, filter size or paper weight with the amount of smoked tobacco and with the ratio CO2/CO. The composition of the vapor phase and that of the particulate matter have been analyzed. The particulate matter retained in the filter of the cigarettes has also been analyzed showing a distinct behavior of the compounds condensed in the cigarette filters and in the traps, related to their retention time. A general trend for the relative yield of some compounds in the different brands have been identified and confirmed by multifunctional analysis. Nevertheless, there are some noticeable compounds that behave differently in the different brands. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of the addition of SBA-15 to the slow pyrolysis of tobacco studied by heart-cutting GC/MC

Emilio Calabuig, Antonio Marcilla

Summary: The study measured the composition of evolved slow pyrolysis products under inert and oxidising atmospheres of reference tobacco from the University of Kentucky and its mixture with an SBA-15 mesoporous silica. The results showed that the addition of SBA-15 affects the types and quantities of pyrolysis products of tobacco, suggesting potential reduction of toxicity in heat-not-burn tobaccos for consumers.

Necessity of imposing total miscibility for certain binary pairs in LLE data correlations

Paloma Carbonell-Hermida, Antonio Marcilla, Maria del Mar Olaya

Summary: During LLE data correlation, the behavior of models in completely miscible binary mixtures is often overlooked, leading to inconsistent results. Commercial tools like Aspen Plus may provide misleading correlations, while developing custom tools can ensure consistent parameters.

Effect of Time, Temperature and Stirring Rate Used in the First Step of the Synthesis of SBA-15 on Its Application as Reductor of Tars in Tobacco Smoke

Nerea Juarez-Serrano, Javier Asensio, Inmaculada Blasco, Maribel Beltran, Antonio Marcilla

Summary: This study investigated the impact of synthesis conditions on the use of SBA-15 as a tobacco additive to reduce toxic and carcinogenic components in tobacco smoke. The optimal conditions of 24 hours synthesis time, 40 degrees Celsius temperature, and 700 rpm stirring rate yielded significant reductions in tar, nicotine, and CO. Long fibers and increased synthesis time were found to improve tar reduction efficiency, showcasing promising results for potential industrial-scale application.

Effect of Reaction Time and Hydrothermal Treatment Time on the Textural Properties of SBA-15 Synthesized Using Sodium Silicate as a Silica Source and Its Efficiency for Reducing Tobacco Smoke Toxicity

Nerea Juarez-Serrano, Desire Berenguer, Isabel Martinez-Castellanos, Inmaculada Blasco, Maribel Beltran, Antonio Marcilla

Summary: The synthesis of SBA-15 using sodium silicate as precursor has been optimized, with hydrothermal treatment found to be crucial for obtaining materials with adequate performance. A 24-hour hydrothermal treatment results in materials with the best properties, while a reaction time between 1 and 2 hours shows the best performance in reducing toxicity in tobacco smoking products.

Effect of a mesoporous catalyst on the flash pyrolysis of tobacco

Emilio Calabuig, Antonio Marcilla

Summary: The study found that the addition of catalyst under oxidising atmosphere and at low temperatures significantly decreased the formation of pyrolysis products, while under inert atmosphere and at high temperatures, it did not have a significant impact on the formation of pyrolysis products.

Acetone+1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate phase diagram: A correlation challenge

Antonio Marcilla, Maria del Mar Olaya, Paloma Carbonell-Hermida, Marta K. Wojtczuk, Hector Rodriguez, Eva Rodil, Ana Soto

Summary: Several physical properties and isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria were measured for a binary system of acetone and the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium acetate. Liquid-liquid equilibria data were also measured. The study proposed a new model with a correction term based on the analysis of excess Gibbs energy, which could simultaneously correlate both sets of equilibrium data with high accuracy.

Effect of the addition of zeolites and silicate compounds on the composition of the smoke generated in the decomposition of Heet tobacco under inert and oxidative atmospheres

A. Marcilla, D. Berenguer, I. Martinez

Summary: Five potential additives, including three zeolites and two silicates, have been studied for reducing harmful compounds generated when smoking Heet tobacco. The results show that USY and SBA-15 additives exhibit significant reductions, with SBA-15 showing the largest reduction in total particle matter.
