Solar UV and other ionizing radiations cause a generation of reactive oxygen species, induce cellular DNA damage and alter skin homeostasis. The use of exogenous antioxidants is increasingly frequents, we attempt to demonstrate that a rosmarinic acid extract acts as photo-protector; both free radical scavenger as an inducer of the body's own endogenous defence mechanisms by regulating tyrosinase activity and stimulating melanin production. Malonyldialdehyde formation (TBARS) was delayed when RA was used. The protection factor was 3.24 times vs AA. TEAC value for RA was 1.6 times vs AA. The radioprotective-antimutagenic effects of RA were measure using the micronucleus test. The level of micronucleous for treatments before irradiation was: RA [14] < AA [22] < DMSO [28] < Control [32], and after irradiation was: RA [23] < AA [25] < DMSO [31] < Control [32]. RA increased the Tyr activity and its expression level in B16 melanoma cells after stimulation lasting 48 h compared with the negative control. In vivo experiments show the capacity of RA orally administered to inhibit cutaneous alterations caused by UVA exposure (skin photocarcinogenesis). Therefore, according all these experiences, RA can be proposed as a proper photo-protective agent. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Substitution among hotels and P2P accommodation in the COVID era: a spatial dynamic panel data model at the listing level

Rafael Suarez-Vega, Jorge Perez-Rodriguez, Juan M. Hernandez

Summary: This paper analyzes the substitution of P2P accommodation for traditional accommodation and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on demand and substitution effects, considering dynamic and spatial spillover effects. The results show that there is a significant substitution effect between P2P accommodation and hotels in the short term, and this substitution effect and consumer sensitivity to prices and substitution increase in the long term. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 has largely distorted the price and income elasticities.

The effect of type of lodging and professionalism on the efficiency of P2P accommodation

Jorge Perez-Rodriguez, Juan M. Hernandez

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of hosts' professionalism and accommodation types on the time-varying technical efficiency of P2P accommodation using a panel data stochastic frontier model. The results show that the lowest priced lodgings are the most efficient and properties managed by single-unit hosts are more efficient than those managed by multi-unit hosts.

Bimodal length of stay in the accommodation sharing economy

Emilio Gomez-Deniz, Jorge Perez-Rodriguez, Juan M. Hernandez

Summary: This paper analyzes the determinants of tourist length of stay in sharing accommodation and proposes a new approach to account for the observed bimodality of length of stay. The empirical analysis shows that the length of stay has changed before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the model approach in this paper outperforms previous bimodality models in terms of estimation simplicity and fit.

A Phytoprostane from Gracilaria longissima Increases Platelet Activation, Platelet Adhesion to Leukocytes and Endothelial Cell Migration by Potential Binding to EP3 Prostaglandin Receptor

Silvia Montoro-Garcia, Sara Martinez-Sanchez, Miguel Carmena-Bargueno, Horacio Perez-Sanchez, Maria Campillo, Camille Oger, Jean-Marie Galano, Thierry Durand, Angel Gil-Izquierdo, Jose Antonio Gabaldon

Summary: The effects of 9-D1t-PhytoP on platelet activation and vascular cells were tested, along with possible interactions with platelets and the endothelial EP3 receptor. The results showed that 9-D1t-PhytoP has prothrombotic and wound-healing properties, and mimics the migration stimulus of PGE(2) in endothelial cells. Computational analysis revealed its potential as an EP3 agonist by forming a stable complex with the EP3 receptor.

Usefulness and Limitations of Multiple Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification in Antithrombin Deficiency

Rosa Cifuentes, Jose Padilla, Maria Eugenia de la Morena-Barrio, Belen de la Morena-Barrio, Carlos Bravo-Perez, Pedro Garrido-Rodriguez, Maria Llamas, Antonia Minano, Vicente Vicente, Maria Luisa Lozano, Javier Corral

Summary: Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) is effective in identifying genetic structural variants in SERPINC1 in 5% of antithrombin deficiency (ATD) cases. However, MLPA has limitations in detecting intronic structural variants, and can produce imprecise and false-positive results for genetic defects affecting MLPA probes. Validation of MLPA results is encouraged based on our study.

Wheat Oxylipins in Response to Aphids, CO2 and Nitrogen Regimes

Mari Merce Cascant-Vilaplana, Eduardo Viteritti, Victor Sadras, Sonia Medina, Maria Puerto Sanchez-Iglesias, Camille Oger, Jean-Marie Galano, Thierry Durand, Jose Antonio Gabaldon, Julian Taylor, Federico Ferreres, Manuel Sergi, Angel Gil-Izquierdo

Summary: This study investigates the impact of aphids feeding on wheat plants and their role in triggering a defensive plant reaction to oxidative stress. The experiment involves different nitrogen and CO2 concentrations, as well as two types of aphids. The results show that aphids significantly affect the levels of certain oxylipins in wheat leaves, indicating their ability to manipulate plant defense mechanisms.

Potential biological contributers to the sex difference in multiple sclerosis progression

Nuria Alvarez-Sanchez, Shannon E. Dunn

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease that targets the myelin sheath of CNS neurons, causing axon injury, neuronal death, and neurological progression. Men with MS exhibit greater cognitive impairment and disability accumulation compared to women. The neurological progression in males is associated with chronic immune activation, increased iron accumulation, white matter lesions, whole brain and grey matter atrophy, and axon loss. Sex differences in biology, including sex chromosome complement and sex hormones, contribute to these disparities.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of exogenously foliar-applied salicylic acid (SA) on oxidative stress in rice. The concentrations of PhytoPs and PhytoFs in immature and mature grains of three different genotypes of rice were monitored, and their influence on grains per panicle and chalkiness was examined. The results showed that SA reduced oxylipin levels and increased rice yield.

Summary: The repair of genome and proteome damage caused by ionizing radiation, oxidizing agents, and aging is crucial for cellular homeostasis. This study investigates the relationship between resistance/response to ionizing radiation, cellular aging, and the mechanisms of response to oxidative stress, free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and antioxidant activity in yeast. The results identify several common processes, such as homologous recombination, non-homologous end joining, and base excision repair pathways, as essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. The study also proposes common biomarkers for radiation resistance/response and aging, as well as for response to radiation and oxidative stress.

Summary: Most pregnant women do not meet the recommended intake of vitamins A and E. However, higher levels of these vitamins in maternal serum during mid-pregnancy are associated with a higher antioxidant status in both the mother and the newborn. Gestational diabetes mellitus is negatively associated with maternal serum vitamin A levels, but no association with oxidative stress parameters was found.
