Many tropical plants have interesting biological activities with potential therapeutic applications. Garcinia mangostana Linn. (GML) belongs to the family of Guttiferae and is named the queen of fruits. It is cultivated in the tropical rainforest of some Southeast Asian nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and Thailand. People in these countries have used the pericarp, (peel, rind, hull or ripe) of GML as a traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysentery, infected wound, suppuration, and chronic ulcer. Experimental studies have demonstrated that extracts of GML have antioxidant, antitumoral, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral activities. The pericarp of GML is a source of xanthones and other bioactive substances. Prenylated xanthones isolated from CIVIL have been extensively studied; some members of these compounds possess antioxidant, antitumoral, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Xanthones have been isolated from pericarp, whole fruit, heartwood, and leaves. The most studied xanthones are alpha, beta, and gamma-mangostins, garcinone E, 8-deoxygartanin, and gartanin. The aim of this review is to summarize findings of beneficial properties of GML's extracts and xanthones isolated from this plant so far. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cobalt protoporphyrin decreases food intake, body weight, and the number of neurons in the Nucleus Accumbens in female rats

Luis Fernando Rubio-Atonal, Norma Serrano-Garcia, Jorge Humberto Limon-Pacheco, Jose Pedraza-Chaverri, Marisol Orozco-Ibarra

Summary: This study demonstrated that CoPP induced hypophagia and weight loss in rats while also reducing the number of neurons in the Nucleus Accumbens Shell. Although CoPP did not alter anxiety-like behaviors and locomotor activity, the results could be relevant to diseases like anorexia. Further research is needed to explore the molecular mechanisms involved in the reduced food intake and weight loss caused by CoPP.

Summary: This study evaluated the time course of mitochondrial mass and bioenergetics alterations induced by a unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), a widely used model to study kidney fibrosis induction and progression mechanisms. The results showed a marked reduction in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and mitochondrial mass during days 7 to 28 of obstruction, suggesting a key role of mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy induction in the impairment of OXPHOS capacity during fibrotic progression.

Backstage players of fibrosis: NOX4, mTOR, HDAC, and S1P; companions of TGF-β

Alexis Paulina Jimenez-Uribe, Tania Gomez-Sierra, Omar Emiliano Aparicio-Trejo, Marisol Orozco-Ibarra, Jose Pedraza-Chaverri

Summary: Fibrosis is characterized by pathological excessive deposition of extracellular matrix, involving a complex network of signal transduction pathways, with TGF-β playing a central role. Additionally, molecules not typically associated with fibrosis such as NOX4, mTOR, HDAC, and S1P have been found to be critical in its development.

Rotenone-Induced Model of Parkinson's Disease: Beyond Mitochondrial Complex I Inhibition

Maria Teresa Ibarra-Gutierrez, Norma Serrano-Garcia, Marisol Orozco-Ibarra

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder diagnosed through motor symptoms, but it also presents numerous non-motor symptoms that appear years before motor symptoms. Experimental models have been used to replicate PD characteristics, but none have fully reproduced all the motor and non-motor symptoms, limiting PD research. The most commonly used models involve administering toxic compounds like MPTP, 6-OHDA, and rotenone, which mimic dopamine deficiency. This review focuses on the rotenone-induced PD model, highlighting its molecular characteristics beyond the inhibition of mitochondrial complex I.

Antiangiogenic Effect of Dopamine and Dopaminergic Agonists as an Adjuvant Therapeutic Option in the Treatment of Cancer, Endometriosis, and Osteoarthritis

Summary: Dopamine and dopamine agonists have the potential to inhibit angiogenesis through the VEGF pathway. They can prevent important processes such as proliferation and migration by blocking the functions of VEGF and VEGFR2 through the D2 receptor. However, more research is needed to fully understand their mechanism and efficacy in diseases like cancer, endometriosis, and OA. This review aims to describe the antiangiogenic action of the DA-D2R/VEGF-VEGFR2 system and compile relevant findings from experimental studies and clinical trials.

Summary: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder associated with oxidative stress. Some antiseizure drugs, including levetiracetam, have been found to have neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the effects of levetiracetam on the oxidant-antioxidant status in the hippocampus of rats with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The results showed that levetiracetam increased antioxidant enzyme activity, reduced hydrogen peroxide levels, and demonstrated scavenging activity against hydroxyl radicals.
