Summary: Ageing-related type 2 diabetes is a significant public health problem that is increasing with population ageing. This study reveals that Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) can improve ageing-associated diabetes by modulating gut microbiota variation and regulating the expression levels of certain proteins. ULP shows potential as a nutraceutical for delaying or preventing the development of ageing-related type 2 diabetes.

Summary: A novel polysaccharide from Ulva lactuca (ULP) was found to exhibit antihyperuricemic activity by regulating biochemical indexes, gene expressions, tissue pathology, and gut microbiota. It effectively reduced serum uric acid levels, improved renal injury, and showed potential in treating hyperuricemia-related diseases.

Summary: The antihyperglycemic effect of Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) was evaluated in aging diabetic mice by monitoring changes in the gut microbiota. The results showed that ULP alleviated type 2 diabetes by improving insulin tolerance, increasing SOD and CAT activities, and lowering blood glucose level. ULP also regulated the expressions of INSR and AMPK, while inhibiting the expressions of JNK, JAK, STAT3, p16, and p38 to improve glucose metabolism dysfunction. The abundance of Alloprevotella and Pediococcus might be the key factor for ULP's antihyperglycemic effectiveness in aging-related diabetes.

Summary: The study found that polysaccharide extracted from Helvella leucopus can lower the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in hyperlipidemic mice. It also regulates liver function and blood lipid metabolism. This suggests that Helvella leucopus polysaccharide could be a new complementary alternative strategy for managing hyperlipidemia.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different extraction conditions on the yields, chemical composition, rheological properties, and antioxidant activities of ulvan. Enzyme and ultrasonic treatment improved extraction yields and affected the composition of ulvan, with enzyme-assisted extraction showing the highest DPPH radical scavenging ability. The physicochemical properties of ulvan were significantly influenced by extraction methods, highlighting potential applications in healthcare due to its antioxidative properties.

Summary: This study elucidated the main structure of the high-sulfated derivative of Ulva pertusa polysaccharide (HU) and explored its therapeutic effect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Results showed that HU effectively reduced blood lipid levels, improved liver function, decreased lipid droplets in the liver, and suppressed the abnormal enlargement of epididymal fat cells. HU appears to have a protective effect on the development of NAFLD.

Summary: This study identified several new ceramides isolated from the edible green algae U. lactuca that demonstrated promising antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, particularly Cer-4 and Cer-5 inhibiting the virus from entering the human host. Furthermore, metabolites from U. lactuca were found to possess potential antiviral activity, indicating the potential of this algae as a source of safe antiviral compounds.

Summary: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a chronic liver disease characterized by inflammation and hepatic steatosis that may coincide with fibrotic activity. A purified beta-glucan compound (PUP-W-1) from Polyporus umbellatus was found to prevent the development of NASH in a murine steatohepatitis model by suppressing inflammation, lipid accumulation, and fibrosis. These findings suggest that PUP-W-1 holds promise as a natural drug candidate or precursor for NASH treatment.
