Summary: This article addresses the nomenclatural and taxonomic issues surrounding Amaranthus caudatus and its related taxa. Neotypes and lectotypes are designated for various names, and several names are considered as synonyms of A. caudatus. Based on morphological, cytological, and molecular data, the taxa caudatus, mantegazzianus, and gibbosus are suggested to be treated as distinct species. A new name, Amaranthus baileyanus, is proposed for A. caudatus var. gibbosus due to a previously validly published Amaranthus gibbosus.

Summary: Amaranthus is a taxonomically complex genus due to its high morphological variability, which results in nomenclatural disorders and misidentifications. Seed micromorphology shows promise in the taxonomy of Amaranthus, but current investigations are limited. In this study, a detailed SEM analysis was conducted on 25 Amaranthus taxa, revealing interesting new taxonomic data. Several seed types were identified, but some species within the deflexus-type were not distinguishable based on seed features. A diagnostic key for the studied taxa was proposed, but subgenera could not be distinguished using seed features, confirming previous molecular data.

Summary: The study investigated the hepatoprotective effect of egg protein hydrolysate (EWH) by regulating antioxidant enzyme expression using in vitro and in vivo models. The results showed that EWH enhanced antioxidant activity in HepG2 cells and alleviated hepatotoxicity in rats induced by carbon tetrachloride. EWH also ameliorated liver tissue injuries and had the highest glutamic acid content in its amino acid composition.

Summary: The study examined the nutritional value, phytochemical constituents, antioxidant, and antiulcer activities of Achyranthes aspera and Amaranthus spinosus. A. spinosus leaves were found to contribute significantly to the dietary intake of iron, making them suitable for treating chronic anemia. Arsenic, cadmium, and lead were undetected in the leaves of the two species, suggesting their potential use as nutraceuticals in South Africa.
