Mononuclear phagocytes represent a heterogeneous population of cells with individual subpopulations exerting different pro- or anti-inflammatory functions. CD163 is a monocyte/macrophage specific marker expressed predominantly on cells which possess strong anti-inflammatory potential. The expression of CD163 is strongly induced by anti-inflammatory mediators such as glucocorticoids and interleukin-10, while being inhibited by pro-inflammatory mediators such as interferon-gamma. CD163-expressing mononuclear phagocytes, as well as soluble CD163, may both take part in downregulating an inflammatory response. It seems, therefore, that CD163 may be an interesting target for therapeutic modulation of the inflammatory response. (Folic: Histochemica et Cytobiologica 2011, Vol. 49, No. 3, 365-374)

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the management of chronic noninfectious respiratory diseases

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the management and outcomes of patients with chronic noninfectious respiratory illnesses. Most chronic respiratory diseases, apart from asthma and cystic fibrosis, are associated with more severe COVID-19 and poor outcomes. The therapeutic management of these patients is similar to others, but there may be worse post-recovery courses leading to pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and pulmonary hypertension. The pandemic has also affected medical activities by limiting access to diagnosis procedures and requiring the development of new monitoring methods and therapeutic strategies. The long-term consequences of these changes remain unknown.

Summary: The study compared the outcomes of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) for femoral neck fracture (FNF) and osteoarthritis (OA). The results indicated that FNF patients were more fragile and required additional care and attention, while the primary reason for the need for hip replacement surgery was osteoarthritis.

Criteria to evaluate efficacy of biologics in asthma: a Global Asthma Association survey

Bernstein, Louis Philippe Boulet, Fulvio Braido

Summary: Currently, there are no universally accepted criteria to measure the response to biologics available as treatment for severe asthma. However, an international panel of experts established four consensus criteria for evaluating the response to biologics after 4 months of treatment. These criteria include reducing systemic corticosteroid dose by ≥50%, decreasing the number of asthma exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids by ≥50%, minimal or no side effects, and achieving asthma control according to validated questionnaires. Overall, this study highlights the importance of establishing standardized criteria for evaluating the response to biologics in severe asthma. Rating: 10/10.

Expression of LIGHT/TNFSF14 and Its Receptors, HVEM and LTβR, Correlates with the Severity of Fibrosis in Lacrimal Sacs from Patients with Lacrimal Duct Obstruction

Pawel Bielecki, Ewa Gindzienska-Sieskiewicz, Joanna Reszec, Bartosz Piszczatowski, Marek Rogowski, Otylia Kowal-Bielecka, Krzysztof Kowal, Andrzej Sieskiewicz

Summary: The expression of LIGHT and its receptors, HVEM and LT beta R, in lacrimal sac biopsies was significantly correlated with the intensity of fibrosis and disease duration. Only LIGHT showed a significant relationship with fibrosis in multivariate analysis, suggesting a potential role in fibrosis and synechiae formation in the lacrimal sac.
