The effects of maternal influenza on the fetus are not well understood. Viremia is believed to occur infrequently and thus vertical transmission appears to be rare. Highly pathogenic strains of influenza virus, such as avian influenza A (H5N1), are more likely to be transmitted across the placenta. Placental tissues of seven women with confirmed H1N1 infection were examined molecularly with RT-PCR and microscopically to investigate whether H1N1 virus vertically transmitted. We found no evidence for placental transmission of H1N1 virus in this study. In the absence of vertical transmission, adverse effects like neonatal seizures, encephalopathy, cerebral palsy, and even neonatal death can still occur. Since a significant knowledge gap exists for the effects of this novel virus on the fetus, further studies will be beneficial.

Seval Ozgu-Erdinc, Huseyin Levent Keskin, Aziz Ahmet Surel, Ozlem Moraloglu Tekin

Summary: The aim of the study is to share the comprehensive experience of a tertiary pandemic center on pregnant women with COVID-19 and compare clinical outcomes between pregnancy trimesters. The study found that the course of the disease and obstetric outcomes may vary among pregnancy trimesters, but overall complications and mortality rates were similar across trimesters.

Summary: Neonatal nutritional supplements may improve early growth for infants born small, but the effects on long-term growth are uncertain and may vary by sex. These supplements can increase length and bone mineral content in infancy, but do not affect BMI in childhood. Supplementation can enhance height z-score in male toddlers, but not in females.

Long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in very low birth weight infants with and without patent ductus arteriosus: A retrospective case control observational study

Sarkhan Elbayiyev, Fuat Emre Canpolat, Gulsum Kadioglu Simsek, Sehribanu Isik, Mehmet Buyuktiryaki, Hayriye Gozde Kanmaz Kutman

Summary: This study investigated the effect of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and medical treatment on long-term developmental outcomes in very low birth weight infants. The results showed a higher prevalence of neurodevelopmental impairment in infants with PDA. However, when other risk factors were taken into account, PDA alone was not an independent risk factor for neurodevelopmental problems. Additionally, there was no difference in outcomes between infants who received different medications for PDA.

Late-onset neonatal sepsis: genetic differences by sex and involvement of the NOTCH pathway

Timothy H. Ciesielski, Xueyi Zhang, Alessandra Tacconelli, Irja Lutsar, Vincent Meiffredy de Cabre, Emmanuel Roilides, Cinzia Ciccacci, Paola Borgiani, William K. Scott, Scott M. Williams, Giorgio Sirugo

Summary: Late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) is a rare and severe condition with high mortality rates. This study aimed to identify genetic variants associated with LOS. The results showed that genetic susceptibility to LOS is sexually dimorphic and NOTCH signaling plays a role in determining risk. There were also sex-specific associations between genes and sepsis, highlighting the importance of sex-specific treatment strategies.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of asphyxia and therapeutic hypothermia on thyroid function in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The results suggest that therapeutic hypothermia may cause alterations in thyroid function tests, and repeat TSH screening after hypothermia may be necessary.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the ONSD measurements and cerebral blood flows in neonates with HIE. The results showed that the RI and PI of the middle cerebral artery were significantly lower in the HIE group compared to the control group. Ultrasonographic ONSD measurements showed high compatibility with MRI measurements.

Summary: Therapeutic hypothermia treatment has an effect on inflammatory markers CRP and IL-6 in infants with HIE, leading to an increase in CRP and decrease in IL-6 and white blood cell count. The influence of hypoxia and hypothermia should be considered when evaluating acute phase reactants.

Being Small for Gestational Age Affect Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Very Preterm Infants

Burak Ceran, Mehmet Buyuktiryaki, Esin Okman, Gulsum Kadioglu Simsek, Hayriye Gozde Kanmaz Kutman, Zeynep Ustunyurt Konuk, Fuat Emre Canpolat

Summary: This study compared the neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants who were SGA or AGA with gestational age <= 30 weeks. The results showed that SGA infants had significantly lower scores in mental and psychomotor development, and being SGA was identified as an independent risk factor for neurodevelopmental delay.

The association between βeta 2-microglobulin and bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Burak Ceran, Gulsum Kadioglu Simsek, Esra Beser, Cuneyt Tayman, Fuat Emre Canpolat, Hayriye Goezde Kanmaz Kutman

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical utility of serum 132-M levels in predicting broncho-pulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. The results showed that infants in the BPD group had significantly higher levels of 132-M compared to the non-BPD group, and there was a weak correlation between serum 132-M levels and BPD. Therefore, monitoring 132-M levels in high-risk preterm infants who may develop BPD could provide additional benefit in predicting BPD occurrence.
