Introduction: Micro RNAs (miRNA) are 21 - 23 nucleotides long and regulate the expression of coding genes by binding imperfectly with their 3' UTR region. The miRNA profile is altered in pathological processes, making miRNAs good targets for drug therapy. Restoration of down-regulated miRNA or inhibition of overexpressed miRNA to return miRNA to its normal state is the basis of miRNA-based therapy. This review focuses on nanocarriers used for the delivery of miRNA that confer physical stability to the unstable RNA structure, protect the RNA from nuclease degradation and aid in effective silencing of target genes. Areas covered: The necessity of the nanocarrier for the delivery of the miRNA is emphasized and the recent research on liposome-, metal- and polymer-mediated miRNA delivery for the inhibition or replacement of the disease-related miRNA is summarized. Expert opinion: The size, charge and surface properties of nanocarriers have to be tuned to ensure effective and safe delivery of the miRNA in clinical practice. The immune responses related to the nanocarriers and the double-stranded nucleotide delivery remain to be addressed. Also, the binding of miRNAs to non-specific targets has to be studied in more detail because miRNAs have multiple targets due to partial binding unlike siRNA.

Piezo-Transmissive Structure Using a Multi-layered Heterogeneous Film for Optical Transmittance Modulation

Gihun Lee, Jungrak Choi, Junseong Ahn, Seokju Cho, Inkyu Park

Summary: Efforts are being made to develop low-power and high-efficiency technologies to reduce pollution in energy production worldwide due to the increasing damage caused by the recent climate crisis. One of the research areas focuses on mechano-responsive optical transmittance modulation technology for applications such as low-power sensors and smart windows. However, fabricating a piezotransmittance structure with a large-area production, high throughput, and good tunability is still challenging. An efficient fabrication method for a multi-layered piezo-transmittance structure has been presented, with tunability achieved through design parameters and surrogate models obtained from simulation and prediction models. Two energy-efficient applications have been demonstrated: a smart window with integrated hydraulic pump for indoor environment control and a telemetry system for remote pressure measurement.

Summary: Electronic nose (e-nose) technology using chemoresistive sensors has been widely studied for its applications in smart factory and personal health monitoring. To address cross-reactivity issues, a novel sensing strategy based on a single micro-LED embedded photoactivated gas sensor has been proposed. This method utilizes time-variant illumination and a deep neural network for species and concentrations identification of various target gases, achieving high accuracy with low power consumption.

APPLICATION OF DEEP LEARNING NETWORK FOR HUMIDITY COMPENSATION OF SEMICONDUCTOR METAL OXIDE GAS SENSORS

Mingu Kang, Incheol Cho, Inkyu Park

Summary: In this research, a humidity compensation method using a deep learning network was proposed to minimize the effect of humidity on semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors. The SMO gas sensors were fabricated by depositing In2O3 on a suspended microheater platform, and gas tests were conducted under various humidity conditions using NO2 gas. The gas sensing data and humidity data were simultaneously used as input data of the deep learning network for real-time humidity compensation. Through this method, the accuracy of predicting the concentration of NO2 gas in different humidity conditions was successfully improved.

Kichul Lee, Mingu Kang, Inkyu Park

Summary: With the increasing interest in environmental pollution, indoor air quality, and industrial safety, the demand for gas sensors is rapidly rising. However, the conventional gas sensors have high power consumption and bulky size, limiting their utilization. To overcome this issue, a micro-sized, ultra-low-power LED gas sensor and an e-nose system using a convolutional neural network algorithm were developed in this study. The results showed the capability to distinguish four different gas species and predict their concentrations in real time.
