The aim of this study was to examine growth of the human eye globe and cornea from early in gestation to late in adult life. Globe antero-posterior length, horizontal and vertical diameters, corneal horizontal and vertical (white to white) diameters and posterior pole to limbus distances were measured using digital calipers (+/-0.01 mm) in 541 postmortem eyes. Additional pre- and postnatal data for some of the dimensions were obtained from the literature. All dimensions examined increase rapidly during prenatal development but postnatal growth differs. Growth of globe antero-posterior length, vertical and horizontal diameters as well as corneal vertical and horizontal diameters stops within 1 year after birth. Logistic analysis is consistent with an asymptotic prenatal growth mode and no further growth after its completion around 1 year after birth. Horizontal and vertical globe diameters are the same at all ages but the corneal horizontal diameter is always larger than the vertical diameter. No differences could be detected between males and females in any of the ocular dimensions. Globe and corneal growth take place primarily during the prenatal growth mode and dimensions reach their maxima, shortly after birth. It is suggested that cessation of a growth stimulating signal at birth marks the end of the prenatal growth mode and that the small increases over the next year are due to cells already stimulated. Male and female eyes of the same age have the same globe and cornea dimensions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) in controlling intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes with Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) and glaucoma, and identified risk factors for failure. The results showed that AGV was effective in IOP control but had a high risk of long-term graft failure in eyes requiring tube intervention.

Estimation of the full shape of the crystalline lens in-vivo from OCT images using eigenlenses

Duardo Martinez-Enriquez, Andrea Curatolo, Alberto de Castro, Judith S. Birkenfeld, Ana M. Gonzalez, Ashik Mohamed, Marco Ruggeri, Fabrice Manns, Zvietcovich Fernando, Susana Marcos

Summary: In this study, we successfully estimated the full shape of the in vivo crystalline lens using the eigenlenses method, which only utilizes information visible through the pupil. Compared to previous methods, eigenlenses showed improved repeatability, robustness, and computational resource utilization in estimating crystalline lens shape. Eigenlenses can efficiently describe the full shape changes of the crystalline lens with accommodation and refractive error.

Summary: Quantifying the geometry of human crystalline lens as a function of age and accommodation is crucial for better treatments of cataract and presbyopia. This study validates the use of eigenlenses to estimate the full shape of dis-accommodated lenses in vivo. The results demonstrate that eigenlenses can accurately estimate the shape of dis-accommodated lenses.

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia with 360° limbal involvement: a study of 130 patients

Vijitha S. Vempuluru, Neha Ghose, Monalisha Pattnaik, Ashik Mohamed, Swathi Kaliki

Summary: This study compared the risk factors, clinical features, and management outcomes of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) with 360 degrees of limbal involvement (360-OSSN) and segmental limbal involvement (SL-OSSN). The results showed that 360-OSSN patients more often had longer duration of symptoms, prior misdiagnosis, and prior intervention. They also had a higher incidence of scleral fixity, corneal/scleral melt, intraocular and orbital tumor extension, and advanced T stage at presentation compared to SL-OSSN patients. Furthermore, lymph node and distant metastasis were more common in the 360-OSSN group during the follow-up period. Aggressive management is required for this advanced form of the disease.

Regulated cell death pathways in the sodium iodate model: Insights and implications for AMD

Mala Upadhyay, Vera L. Bonilha

Summary: The sodium iodate (NaIO3) model is a valuable tool in studying dry AMD and evaluating the retinal structure. Through extensive research, it has been found that the death of RPE cells caused by NaIO3 injection is closely related to vision loss in patients with dry AMD. Therefore, studying NaIO3 can provide insights into the mechanisms of RPE and photoreceptor cell death and contribute to understanding RPE degeneration in AMD.

A new model of axon degeneration in the mouse optic nerve using repeat intraocular pressure challenge

Vicki Chrysostomou, Katharina C. Bell, Sze Woei Ng, Samyuktha Suresh, Gayathri Karthik, Marion Millet, Yingying Chung, Jonathan G. Crowston

Summary: We present a new experimental model for inducing retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction and degeneration in mice. This model allows for the reliable induction of RGC dysfunction and loss, with the resilience of the optic nerve being dependent on the age of the animal. The time-defined nature of the functional and structural changes observed in this model will facilitate the study of glial responses and the evaluation of neuroprotective treatments after intraocular pressure (IOP) injury.
