Summary: The study found a high prevalence rate of Salmonella in meat products, with most isolates being multidrug-resistant but susceptible to cefotaxime. Out of 13 plant extracts, cinnamon oil and paprika water extract showed antimicrobial activity and synergistic effect with cefotaxime. Therefore, cinnamon oil is recommended as a food additive to combat resistant foodborne pathogens.

Summary: This study reviewed the scientific literature of 24 different complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) therapies used in cats, dogs, and horses, and found that there is insufficient scientific documentation to draw clear conclusions about their clinical effect. The research assessed 42 eligible publications representing nine different CAVM therapies, with varying levels of bias and reported treatment effects. Further research is needed to better understand the efficacy of these CAVM therapies.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify and summarize the CAM recommendations associated with insomnia treatment and care from existing comprehensive clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). The findings showed that existing guidelines lack clear recommendations for the use of CAM therapies for insomnia management, and there is a lack of high-quality evidence and multidisciplinary consultation in CPG development. More well-designed studies and interdisciplinary collaboration are urgently needed.

Summary: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) includes a variety of therapies that are not commonly used in conventional medicine. In Australia, about two thirds of the population use CAM, but only around half of them discuss it with their doctors. These therapies are often used by patients with life-limiting illness who experience high symptom burden. However, many of these therapies lack demonstrated efficacy for the conditions and symptoms they are used for. There have also been reports of toxicity, adverse effects, batch irregularities, and interactions with other therapies for some CAM products, depending on how they are sold. This, along with the lack of standardization and interchangeability between brands, has made doctors hesitant to support their use. This article provides general pharmacological principles for a small selection of chemicals used in a medical setting to offer guidance for their use.

Summary: The present study conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify studies on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) interventions for long COVID and provide an overview of the research status. The analysis revealed that there are few studies published about the use of CAM for long COVID and long-term management for COVID-19 survivors. More original studies, including randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews, are needed to support the evidence for their use in the management of long COVID.

Summary: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely used by skin cancer patients, with self-administration rates reaching up to 40%-50% in melanoma. Phytochemicals, particularly Curcumin, have shown promising in vitro efficacy against skin cancer, but there is a lack of human clinical trials supporting CAM effectiveness in skin cancer treatment.

Summary: Background: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) may be an attractive option for treating depression. Methods: This scientometric analysis examined global research on using CAM for depression treatment and identified hotspots and frontiers. Results: A total of 1,710 publications were analyzed, showing an increasing trend in annual publications. The USA was the leading research center, and most research collaboration was limited within the same country, institution, or research team. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine was the most productive periodical. Acupuncture and body-mind techniques were the most researched CAM therapies. Inflammation, rating scale, and psychological stress were the recent trending topics. Conclusion: Evidence-based CAM treatment for depression is gaining global attention, with body-mind techniques and acupuncture as research hotspots and emerging trends. Future research may focus on investigating the mechanisms of CAM treatments in reducing depression, particularly in terms of psychological stress and inflammation levels.

Summary: This analytical review provides a quantitative overview of the existing pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of ADHD treatments investigated in clinical trials during 1999-2021. Non-pharmacological therapies, including behavioral options and devices, were the focus of the majority of studies, while pharmacological treatments accounted for a smaller proportion. The most common drug classes were central nervous system stimulants, selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors, and alpha2 adrenergic receptor agonists.

Summary: There are concerns about the development of cannabis use disorder (CUD) in patients using medical cannabis for chronic pain. The current diagnostic criteria for CUD may not accurately identify patients using cannabis for therapeutic reasons. Alternative strategies are needed to determine the true prevalence of CUD in chronic pain patients treated with medical cannabis. In a study conducted in three German pain centers, the prevalence of CUD in chronic pain patients prescribed medical cannabis was assessed using anonymous questionnaires.

Summary: This study found higher gene expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-2, IL-8, and TNF in white blood cells of patients with SFN compared to healthy controls. The combination of these three cytokines had high diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, female patients showed higher gene expression levels of IL-8 and TNF. IL-2 gene expression was negatively correlated with current pain intensity, and IL-10 gene expression differed between different types of pain.

Summary: This article presents a new model called FITSS (Fibromyalgia: Imbalance of Threat and Soothing Systems), which proposes that an imbalance in emotion regulation, specifically an overactive 'threat' system and underactive 'soothing' system, may contribute to the development of fibromyalgia. This model provides a new perspective for future research and may stimulate the discovery of novel therapeutic interventions.

Summary: Polyneuropathy (PNP) refers to diseases of the peripheral nervous system, with 50% of cases presenting with neuropathic pain. Certain types of PNP show pain restricted to the distal leg skin, indicating a local regulatory process leading to pain. This study suggests that a pro-inflammatory pathway mediated by NF-κB may contribute to pain development in patients with painful PNP. Our findings support the hypothesis of local inflammatory processes involved in pain in PNP, and suggest disrupted anti-inflammatory pathways in inflammatory PNP involving TRPV1 and SIRT1.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL) and the characteristics of BTZ-induced peripheral neuropathy (BIPN). The study found that both patients with ongoing BTZ treatment and patients with previous BTZ treatment had higher serum NfL levels compared to controls, and patients with ongoing BTZ treatment had higher NfL levels than patients with past treatment. Serum NfL levels correlated with electrophysiological measures of axonal damage in the group with ongoing BTZ treatment.

Summary: Liver test abnormalities are common in patients with COVID-19 and seasonal respiratory viruses, and are associated with poor clinical outcome. Hepatocellular injury has the greatest prognostic significance 48 h after admission. Failure of liver functions to improve or worsen after 48 h is strongly associated with increased risk of death or ventilation in RSV, COVID-19, and influenza patients.
