Clinacanthus nutans Lindau leaves (CN) have been used in traditional medicine but the therapeutic potential has not been explored for cancer prevention and treatment. Current study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and antiproliferative effects of CN, extracted in chloroform, methanol, and water, on cancer cell lines. Antioxidant properties of CN were evaluated using DPPH, galvinoxyl, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide based radical scavenging assays, whereas the tumoricidal effect was tested on HepG2, IMR32, NCL-H23, SNU-1, Hela, LS-174T, K562, Raji, and IMR32 cancer cells using MTT assay. Our data showed that CN in chloroform extract was a good antioxidant against DPPH and galvinoxyl radicals, but less effective in negating nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide radicals. Chloroform extract exerted the highest antiproliferative effect on K-562 (91.28 +/- 0.03%) and Raji cell lines (88.97 +/- 1.07%) at 100 mu g/ml and the other five cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner, but not on IMR-32 cells. Fourteen known compounds were identified in chloroform extract, which was analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectra analysis. In conclusion, CN extracts possess antioxidant and antiproliferative properties against cultured cancer cell lines, suggesting an alternate adjunctive regimen for cancer prevention or treatment.

Phosphorus Removal and Phytonutrients Retention in the Refining of Solvent Extracted Palm-Pressed Mesocarp Fiber Oil

Harrison Lik Nang Lau, Yi Shen Tee, Mieow Kee Chan, Soek Sin Teh

Summary: This study found that refining palm-pressed mesocarp fiber oil with 0.05 wt.% of phosphoric acid through wet degumming can reduce phosphorus and free fatty acid content while retaining key phytonutrients. Therefore, this method provides a new resource of nutritious oil.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the immunological and antimicrobial properties of breast milk in pregnant women with or without vaginal yeast infections. The study found that concentrations of IL-10, IgA, IgM, IgG, EGF, and TGF-alpha were similar in both groups. However, breast milk from women in the W-group who were below 31 years old had a higher concentration of EGF compared to the WO-group. Additionally, breast milk from the WO-group exhibited higher anti-Candida properties. Correlation analysis showed that the concentration of TGF-alpha in breast milk positively correlated with the concentrations of IL-10 and IgA in the W-group. These findings suggest that while breast milk from women with vaginal infections during pregnancy may not hinder Candida growth, other immuno-modulatory bioactives may compensate for this protective effect.

Summary: This study synthesized 1,3-dihydroxyxanthone and its derivatives with different groups at C3 position, and investigated their inhibition of AChE activity. Some of these derivatives showed strong inhibitory activity, and molecular docking study revealed their binding mechanism with AChE. These derivatives have the potential to be developed as lead compounds for Alzheimer's disease drugs.

Summary: Cancers such as breast, colon, and lung cancers have shown alarming increases in the number of new diagnoses and mortality rates. Non-specific toxicity limits the use of current chemotherapy drugs, necessitating the development of new agents such as xanthones. Prenylated xanthones have demonstrated cytotoxic activity against cancer cells and potential as anticancer drugs, but further studies are required to establish their effectiveness and safety.

Vaginal Infections during Pregnancy Increase Breast Milk Microbiome Alpha Diversity and Alter Taxonomic Composition

Azka Ainun Nisaa, Chern-Ein Oon, Sasidharan Sreenivasan, Venugopal Balakrishnan, Deepa Rajendran, Jun-Jie Tan, Fatin Fazrina Roslan, Svetoslav Dimitrov Todorov, Woo-Sik Jeong, Feiyan Zhao, Nur Syafiqah Mohamad Nasir, Zakuan Zainy Deris, Heping Zhang, Yong-Ha Park, Guoxia Liu, Min-Tze Liong

Summary: We compared the microbiota profiles of breast milk from women with and without vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy. Breast milk from women with vaginal yeast infection exhibited higher alpha diversity across different taxonomic levels. The composition of breast milk from the two groups showed marginal differences at certain taxonomic levels. Our findings suggest that vaginal infection during pregnancy may affect breast milk composition, but it may not pose a threat to infant growth and development.

The Effects and Mechanisms of Xanthones in Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review

Li Wen Pang, Sharina Hamzah, Sui Ling Janet Tan, Siau Hui Mah, Hui Yin Yow

Summary: Xanthones are natural compounds with potential neuroprotective effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to review the effects and mechanisms of xanthones in cell culture and animal studies, revealing their roles in AD. The results showed that xanthones exhibited anti-cholinesterase activity, neuroprotective effects, and reduced neuronal inflammation. They also modulated signaling pathways and suppressed endoplasmic reticulum stress. However, there is still limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of xanthones in AD. Further studies are needed to explore their full potential.
