Ganoderma lucidum (M.A. Curtis:Fr.) P. Karst is a popular medicinal mushroom. Scientific reports had shown that the wound healing effects of G. lucidum were partly attributed to its rich polysaccharides. However, little attention has been paid to its potential effects on wounds associated with diabetes mellitus. In this study, we evaluated the wound healing activity of the hot aqueous extract of G. lucidum in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The extract of G. lucidum was standardised based on chemical contents (w/w) of total polysaccharides (25.1%), ganoderic acid A (0.45%), and adenosine (0.069%). Six groups of six rats were experimentally wounded in the posterior neck region. Intrasite gel was used as a positive control and aqueous cream as the placebo. Topical application with 10% (w/w) of mushroom extract-incorporated aqueous cream was more effective than that with Intrasite gel in terms of wound closure. The antioxidant activity in serum of rats treated with aqueous extract of G. lucidum was significantly higher; whereas the oxidative protein products and lipid damage were lower when compared to those of the controls. These findings strongly support the beneficial effects of standardised aqueous extract of G. lucidum in accelerating wound healing in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Upcycling the Spent Mushroom Substrate of the Grey Oyster Mushroom Pleurotus pulmonarius as a Source of Lignocellulolytic Enzymes for Palm Oil Mill Effluent Hydrolysis

Nurul Anisa Mat Yunan, Tan Yee Shin, Vikineswary Sabaratnam

Summary: This study demonstrated the utilization of lignocellulolytic enzymes from spent mushroom substrate for the hydrolysis of palm oil mill effluent, leading to the production of biohydrogen gas. Enzyme activities and productivities were analyzed, and optimized conditions resulted in high reducing sugar yield and biohydrogen gas production. The results show that enzymes from spent mushroom substrate can effectively hydrolyze POME, showcasing their potential for environmental remediation in the palm oil industry.

Summary: The study revealed that fractions from Ganoderma neo-japonicum have therapeutic potential in managing hyperglycemia-associated colorectal cancer (CRC). The hexane and chloroform fractions stimulated NO production and induced cell cycle arrest, with the apoptotic effects of hexane fraction being dependent on glucose levels. Overall, the fractions show promising effects in treating CRC associated with high glucose levels.

Perceived Research Misconduct Among the Pharmacy Academics and Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study in Malaysia

Wan Ping Ng, Khong Yun Pang, Pei Boon Ooi, Chia Wei Phan

Summary: This study investigated the knowledge, awareness, and acceptance of research misconduct among Pharmacy academics and students in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire was conducted with 393 participants. The findings suggest that awareness of terminologies regarding research misconduct is positively related to perceived research misconduct, while acceptance of unethical practices in research is negatively correlated. However, knowledge and awareness of research misconduct do not significantly predict perceived research misconduct. The study highlights the need for further research to explore other factors contributing to research misconduct among Pharmacy academics and students in Malaysia.
