Summary: Prion gene mutations are associated with diverse disease phenotypes and have been reported in various neurodegenerative diseases. This review focuses on prion mutations in Asian countries, highlighting the clinical phenotypes and imaging data associated with these mutations. Several prion mutations are specific to Asians and have rarely been reported in other populations. These differences may be attributed to geographical or ethical isolation. Further studies are needed to investigate additional genetic factors that influence disease progression or act as neuroprotective factors.

Summary: In this study, the proteomes of Korean and Chinese kimchi were evaluated using shotgun proteomics, revealing 23 proteins that could potentially be used as markers to discriminate between the two types. The geographical origins of the kimchi samples could be distinguished based on the proteomic data, indicating significant proteomic differences caused by geographical origin.

Summary: This study compares the physicochemical properties, taste, and volatile compounds of Northeastern Chinese dajiang (C) and Korean doenjang (K) and distinguishes the discriminant volatile metabolites between them. The result revealed that group K exhibited more similar physicochemical properties to group C, but had different taste characteristics and volatile compounds. Our study provides a basis for explaining the flavor differences between Northeastern Chinese dajiang and Korean doenjang from the perspective of volatile metabolites.

Summary: From the beginning of a synthetic chemist's training, experiments are conducted based on recipes from textbooks and manuscripts. However, it has been shown that model-based, algorithm-based, and miniaturized high-throughput techniques outperform human chemical intuition in understanding chemical systems and achieving reaction optimization. Many synthetic chemists are not exposed to these techniques, leading to a disproportionate number of scientists unable to utilize these methodologies. This review serves as a reference for inspired scientists, highlighting the basics and cutting-edge of chemical reaction optimization and its relation to process scale-up.

Summary: China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea effectively controlled the spread of COVID-19 and maintained lower case-fatality rates by implementing different intervention strategies. While China, Singapore, and South Korea performed well in controlling the growth of cases with containment strategies, Japan, with a mitigation strategy, had a lower case-fatality rate but a faster increase in new cases. This suggests that a containment strategy may be more effective than a mitigation strategy.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of cancer on the utilization of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (T&CAM). The findings showed that cancer patients were more likely to use both conventional medicine and T&CAM, and the occurrence of cancer increased the number of outpatient visits for T&CAM. Additionally, T&CAM was more frequently utilized by vulnerable populations.

Summary: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical science and cultural heritage that has been empirically applied and preserved by the Chinese people for thousands of years. With the comprehensive prosperity of China and rapid advancement in technology, the healthcare status of the Chinese people has become one of the country's most crucial concerns. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of People's Republic of China in 2012, nearly 30 policies and measures regarding TCM development have been issued.

Summary: In China, track access charges were implemented for passenger trains in 2005 and freight trains in 2017. The coexistence of different railway enterprises and the interconnected characteristic of the railway network have led to a high proportion of inter-rail company traffic. This has resulted in a series of revenue/cost settlement regimes reforms being adopted.

Summary: Pinellia Tuber is a medicinal herb used in both traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese Kampo medicine, but with differences in processing. In China, the processing methods for Pinellia Tuber have a long history since the Han dynasty, while Japan has mainly used Pinellia Tuber malt influenced by literature from the Song dynasty. Japanese Kampo medicine tends to adopt a more positivistic approach compared to traditional Chinese medicine, leading to the difference in processing methods for Pinellia Tuber.

Summary: This review assessed the effectiveness and safety of Five-flavor Sophora falvescens enteric-coated capsule (FSEC) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). The results showed that FSEC may be effective in UC treatment compared to conventional medicine, and its use does not increase the risk of adverse events. However, due to the limited number of clinical trials and low methodological quality, the findings should be interpreted with caution.

Summary: This study explored the barriers and facilitators for smoking cessation among smokers with COPD in China. The study found that motivation, capability, and opportunity were key factors for successful smoking cessation. COPD-related symptoms served as a strong motivation for quitting, while physical benefits and strong willpower facilitated maintenance of quitting. Exposure to smoking environment and nicotine addiction were common barriers for relapse. Few participants had experienced professional smoking cessation interventions and preferred alternative methods like auricular acupressure.

Summary: The relationship between health literacy, attitudes towards acupuncture, and behavior in choosing this therapy was studied among Japanese participants. The study found that participants with higher health literacy tended to have more positive attitudes towards acupuncture. Acupuncture was perceived as effective for chronic low back pain, tension-type headache, and knee pain due to osteoarthritis, but less effective for postoperative nausea/vomiting and prostatitis symptoms. The participants' attitudes towards acupuncture were influenced by their health literacy, number of information sources, and previous acupuncture experience.
