Association of Cognitive Performance with Frailty in Older Individuals with Cognitive Complaints

Summary: Frailty is associated with poor cognitive performance in older adults with memory complaints in Brazil, while slower gait speed is related to worse performance in some cognitive domains. Grip strength does not have an association with cognitive performance, but gait speed shows significant interactions with education level.

The long-term course of cognition in bipolar disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis of patient-control differences in test-score changes

Cecilia Samame, Brenda Lucia Cattaneo, Maria Cristina Richaud, Sergio Strejilevich, Ivan Aprahamian

Summary: Neuropsychological impairment is a key feature of bipolar disorder (BD) that is evident even in early-course patients and predicts functional outcomes. This review synthesizes research findings comparing long-term neurocognitive trajectories between BD patients and healthy individuals. The results show no evidence of progressive cognitive deterioration in most bipolar individuals.

Summary: This study found independent and significant associations between appetite loss in older adults and age, ethnicity, and the presence of depressive symptoms.

Summary: The study found that in a convenience sample of older adults in Brazil, 30.2% were pre-frail and 31.1% were frail participants. Frail and pre-frail participants were older and had higher proportions of sarcopenia risk and appetite loss compared to non-frail individuals.

Weight loss severity and functional decline among the oldest old in a middle-income country: The FIBRA study longitudinal findings

Ligiana. P. Corona, Flavia. C. D. Andrade, Flavia. S. A. Borim, Ivan Aprahamian, Andre Fattori, Matteo Cesari, Anita L. Neri, Monica S. Yassuda

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between weight loss severity and functional decline in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) among Brazilian oldest-old adults. The findings suggest that severe weight loss is associated with functional decline.

Phenotyping Superagers Using Resting-State fMRI

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the key differences in discriminative networks and their main nodes between superagers and cognitively average elderly controls. The key networks that differentiated superagers and elderly controls were the default mode, salience, and language networks. Potential imaging biomarkers for predicting superagers can be provided by the functional connectivity in these networks. The 7T field holds promise for accurately detecting the functional connectivity patterns in superagers.

Summary: Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is associated with slow gait and subjective cognitive decline, and it is considered a prodrome for dementia. This study investigated the link between MCR and body composition, including sarcopenia and systemic inflammation, in pre-frail older adults. The results showed that MCR was associated with higher body fat percentages, sarcopenia prevalence, and levels of inflammatory biomarkers. Sarcopenia, body fat percentage, and the ratio of progranulin to TNF-a were independently associated with MCR. Longitudinal studies are needed to understand the role of body fat indices and IL-10 in the trajectory to dementia in pre-frail older adults with MCR.

Summary: The study investigates the value of using ACE-R combined with sociodemographic factors in the differential diagnosis between AD and bvFTD. The results show that combining ACE-R scores with age, sex, and education level can effectively differentiate AD from bvFTD.

Efficacy of cognitive remediation in bipolar disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Cecilia Samame, Paula Durante, Brenda Cattaneo, Ivan Aprahamian, Sergio Strejilevich

Summary: Cognitive impairment is a major obstacle to functional recovery in bipolar disorder. Cognitive remediation (CR) is considered a promising treatment, but this review found that CR had limited effects on functional improvement in bipolar disorder patients. The current data do not support the inclusion of CR as a treatment recommendation in clinical practice guidelines for bipolar disorder management.

Influence of multimorbidity patterns on the activities in the day-to-day lives ofthe elderly: nine-year follow-up ofthe Fibra Study

Diego Salvador Muniz da Silva, Marcela Fernandes Silva, Daniela de Assumpcao, Priscila Maria Stolses Bergamo Francisco, Anita Liberalesso Neri, Monica Sanches Yassuda, Flavia Silva Arbex Borim

Summary: The study assessed the impact of multimorbidity and its effects on the day-to-day activities of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Data from the FIBRA Study were used, and activities of daily living (ADL) were evaluated using Katz's index. Different patterns of chronic diseases were classified, including multimorbidity, cardio-pulmonary, vascular-metabolic, and mental-musculoskeletal. Analysis using chi-square test and Poisson regression revealed that elderly individuals with multimorbidity and specific disease patterns had a higher risk of functional decline in ADL over a nine-year period.

Relationship between chronic pain , depressive symptoms, and functional disability in community-dwelling older adults: mediating role of frailty

Flavia Silva Arbex Borim, Daniela de Assumpcao, Monica Sanches Yassuda, Henrique Trajano de Moraes Costa, Samila Sathler Tavares Batistoni, Anita Liberalesso Neri, Richard C. Oude Voshaar, Ivan Aprahamian

Summary: This study examined the direct and indirect effects of chronic pain, depressive symptoms, frailty components, and functional disability in older adults living in the community through a pathway analysis. The results showed that there was a direct association between chronic pain and depressive symptoms, and both were associated with frailty. The number of frailty components and depressive symptoms were directly associated with functional disability. Frailty had an indirect effect on the association between chronic pain, depressive symptoms, and functional disability.
